Preakness Stakes Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on June 23, 2007

You won’t want to make your Preakness Stakes predictions without doing the necessary research in order to pick winners. Jimmy Boyd and his Locksmith Sports Picks team is going to try to give you a few tips and pointers on what they look for before making a decision as to which horse they believe is going to come out on top.

The Preakness takes place at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland and is the second leg of the Triple Crown for top 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the country. This is the race that will decide whether there will be a Triple Crown contender heading into the Belmont Stakes in June. This is the shortest race of the three big ones at 1 3/16 mile and always brings in the Derby winner and the top finishers from that race. It is held the third Saturday of May and is considered kind of the ugly step child since the other two races are held at Churchill Downs. This is also the oldest of the three races having gotten it’s start in 1873, two years before the first Derby was held. The name comes from the horse, Preakness, who won the 1870 Dinner Party Stakes. The Triple Crown didn’t come about until the 1930’s, and now the best of the best gather at Pimlico to see if they can either contend for the crown jewels or prevent the Derby winner from doing so.

This is a short track so with your Preakness Stakes predictions you are going to want to find a fast horse, not one that runs well at long distance. With fewer horses you don’t have to worry as much about him getting stuck in a bumping battle like you do at the Derby. When race day approaches check on the track conditions, but as far as early handicapping we take a look at the experience at the jockey, owner, and trainer positions. If a horse did well at the Derby these guys can get caught up in all the hoopla and distracted from the races lying ahead. If those three have been Derby winners or contenders before they will be able to change their focus to this second race. Also look at each horse’s breed and heritage. It’s a sprinter’s heaven, so if these young horses have parents that had speed, that’s a positive sign.
