Preparing for NFL Preseason Handicapping

Written by Jimmy Boyd

With the NFL preseason now starting to get underway many bettors will be thinking of throwing some money on the line. Many people try to shy away from the betting the NFL preseason because it is rather hard to predict the outcome of a meaningless game. Usually some second and third string players who don’t usually get to start will get a lot of playing time to show what they bring to the table. I feel that the NFL preseason is a key opportunity to pad and grow your bankroll for the real season and to get a feel for things. The truth of the matter is that it only takes a little bit of time and effort to do some research on the teams that are playing to get results and be successful. I am going to discuss some things that I take into account when doing my NFL preseason handicapping before I make a decision on any preseason game. If you do the same then you should have no problems in being successful and making some serious cash.

Before the start of each game you want to know the coach’s mind set. Knowing how a coach is going to approach a game in the preseason is very important. Some coaches treat games like they are just practices, while other may believe it is very important to instill a winning attitude for their team. Some teams may have had a coaching change over the off season and other may be coming off of a poor season. These are the teams that will be hungry for wins and that you should keep your eye on. Also it does not hurt to check a coach’s lifetime preseason record, as it only takes a couple of minutes.

Preseason football is also the only time that a coach will make his game plan and tactics public knowledge. Information such as how much playing time a certain player will get is often available. An example of this would be if the New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said that quarterback Tom Brady would only play the first series of the game and will sit the rest of the entire game. He might also say that the first string defense will play the first quarter, but then he will be substituting in players to give them a chance to play. You can find out this information easily by just looking online or watching TV. This is very valuable and could determine the outcome of a game.

Another important factor to look into is team depth. We know that the second and third string player will be playing most of the NFL preseason games so it is very important to know who these players are and how good they are. Having depth at skill positions plays a very big advantage in games. Teams like Detroit, Chicago and Atlanta although not really star filled have two solid options at the quarterback position.

Last but not least is scheduling. Some teams may have an edge in experience over another. Some teams may have already played 1 game and have had time to work out some of the kinks. This may also work as a disadvantage if some of their players got banged up or injured. Make sure that you keep your eyes open for different reports and you should be successful.
