St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers NFL Betting & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

A battle of 2-7 NFC West teams go head-to-head this week and early public money is coming in on the 49ers following Monday night’s close call in the desert. The 49ers were a good play call away from beating first place Arizona on the road on ESPN’s Monday Night Football last week. The strong effort suggests that interim coach Mike Singletary’s tactics of calling out the team has inspired better play from the 49ers. We’ll see if they can get back up from last week’s heartbreaker. Odds makers think they will and have listed the 49ers as 6.5-point favorites with the total set at 43.5.

The San Francisco 49ers came out of the shoot ready to pull off a shocking upset when Allen Rossum returned the opening kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown to give the Niners a lead they would keep until 4:21 remaining. The 49ers had one play to win from the 2-yard line and they called fullback Michael Robinson’s number. He was stuffed and the 49ers were left to say “not again.” Offensive genius Mike Martz who created the Greatest Show on Turf in St. Louis came up with a dive against a stacked front. Somebody didn’t eat their Wheaties. At least he could have given the ball to star tailback Frank Gore who carried 23 times for 99 yards in the contest. Gore is the NFL’s sixth-leading rusher with 728 yards. He did not practice Wednesday due to a neck injury suffered on the final drive but he is expected to play against St. Louis on Sunday. He’s probably chomping at the bit too as the Rams bring in the 30th-ranked rush defense in football. In four career starts against St. Louis, Gore has averaged 93.5 yards rushing. QB Shaun Hill completed 19-of-40 passes for 217 yards and two first-half touchdowns, but lost a fumble and was intercepted twice in the final 30 minutes against the Cardinals. He’ll need to put together two good halves this week to ensure the 49ers don’t relinquish anymore leads. It was good to see tight end Vernon Davis on the field after being sent to the locker room early in Singletary’s coaching debut. He caught his first TD pass of the season in last week’s game. If you like San Francisco’s improvement to culminate in a win this week, bet the 49ers at -6.5 at BetUS and receive up to a 50% sign up bonus.

Betting NFL on the Rams this season has not been kind to backers. St. Louis was blown out last Sunday 47-3 by the New York Jets. It was the Rams third straight loss. They committed five turnover and trailed 40-0 at the half. Marc Bulger did not look anything like a former Pro Bowl QB, completing just 6 of 13 passes for 65 yards and an interception. He was also sacked twice and gave up a fumble that was returned 50 yards for a score. Trent Green took over in the second half, but completed only 5 of 10 passes for 70 yards and an interception. Bulger is expected to start against this week. The coach Jim Haslett said he was pulled because they were losing and not because he was playing badly. The major problem for the Rams is the injury to Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson who was instrumental in both of their wins. Without him in the lineup, teams have not had to respect the run or even his threat to make plays as a receiver out of the backfield. They will likely be without Jackson again Sunday. I would be very shocked if the Rams did not bounce back to play much better this week. Most teams do after getting embarrassed like that. Bet the Rams at +6.5 if you think they can challenge the 2-7 49ers on the road.
