St. Louis Rams at New York Jets Odds

Thus far the move to bring in future Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre has worked out as he has the New York Jets in a tie for first place in the AFC East division. Favre is easily the team’s biggest star since Joe Namath but he isn’t exactly playing perfect football in the early going. While Favre continues to make jaw dropping plays, it also seems like he makes more and more bad plays as well. Favre has been intercepted eight times while throwing only three touchdown strikes in his last four games but the Jets have managed to win three of those contests. Odds makers like the New York to continue winning this week and have listed the Jets as 9-point favorites with the total set at 44.
After throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown to swing the momentum Buffalo’s way, Favre bounce back to engineered a 14-play drive in the Jets’ 26-17 win last Sunday. The drive milked 8 minutes, 41 seconds off the clock and made it a two-possession game on Jay Feely’s 31-yard field goal. The win moved the Jets into a three-way tie with New England and Buffalo atop the division.
At 5-3, the Jets have to like where they are at considering that they were only 1-7 at this point last season. The Jets have already eclipsed last season’s win total and this team still have plenty of room for improvement. First off, Favre is still learning the offense. The defense is getting better and better each week. It is starting to resemble the unit we saw in 2006 when the Jets surprised everyone in making the playoffs. New York had a strong game versus the Bills, holding them to 30 yards rushing and sacking Trent Edwards five times. On the season, New York is only allowing 76.0 yards per game rushing.
The Rams desperately need Stephen Jackson on the field and healthy if they want to have a chance this week. Jackson has been hampered by a quadriceps injury that he suffered against Dallas back on Oct. 19th, and didn’t play against New England the following week. He was back in action against the Cardinals last Sunday but looked far from healthy. Jackson carried only seven times for 17 yards in the 34-13 loss. The team got another dose of bad news when backup tailback Antonio Pittman suffered a hamstring injury in the game.
Concerns over their running back depth encourages the Rams to sign free agent Samkon Gado who played at Houston and Miami last season. If Jackson can’t go, the Rams are going to have a very tough time gaining yards on the ground against a stout Jets run defense. That puts the pressure on QB Marc Bulger to deliver through the air. The former Pro Bowler has the ability to pick apart the Jets secondary if he has time to throw.
The Rams trail the Arizona Cardinals by three games in the NFC West and will be trying to avoid their third straight following their only two wins of the season. History does weigh heavily in their favor as St. Louis has won seven straight against New York.
