St. Louis Rams at Green Bay Packers Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on October 11, 2011

The Green Bay Packers will try to remain unbeaten when they host the 0-4 St. Louis Rams Sunday.

Odds makers don’t expect the defending Super Bowl champs to have much trouble getting the job done this week. The Packers are currently listed as a 14.5-point favorite with the total set at 48.

The Packers improved to 5-0 last Sunday night with a 25-14 victory on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. After falling behind 14-0, Green Bay rattled off 25 unanswered points.

Aaron Rodgers had himself a game. He completed 26 of 39 passes for 396 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

James Jones led the Pack with five catches for 140 yards and a score.

James Starks led the way on the ground with 40 yards on 12 carries.

The Rams are hoping to benefit from a week off when they hit the field Sunday. They were last in action on Oct. 2, enduring a 17-10 loss at home to the Washington Redskins.

Second-year signal caller Sam Bradford completed 20 of 43 pass attempts for 164 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the loss.

He received no help from the running game as Steven Jackson was bottled up. He gained only 45 yards on 17 carries.

Jackson could be in for another rough day against a Green Bay stop unit that ranks third in the NFL with 75.8 rushing yards allowed per game. Bradford, however, could be poised for a big day through the air.

The Packers rank 30th in the league with 299.8 passing yards allowed per contest.

The St. Louis defense may be at the mercy of the Green Bay offense in this one. The Packers rank No. 1 in the NFL in scoring with 34.6 points per game and No. 4 in total offense with 428.6 yards per contest.

The Rams, meanwhile, rank 31st in scoring defense with 28.2 points allowed per game and 27th in total defense with 404.8 yards allowed per game.

Teams have been able to run on St. Louis almost at will. The Rams rank dead last in the league with 180 rushing yards allowed per game.

While St. Louis’ faulty run defense may encourage Green Bay to get its running backs a few more carriers, the Packers will remain a pass-first offense Sunday.

Green Bay ranks fourth in the league with 329.6 passing yards per game, and Rodgers leads the NFL with a 122.9 passer rating.

The Packers have won three of the last four meetings in this series with the most recent being a 36-17 victory in St. Louis on Sept. 27, 2009.

These two last met in Green Bay on Oct. 8, 2006 with the Rams winning 23-20.

In regard to the point spread, the favorite has been the play. The team laying points has covered the spread in each of the last six meetings.  The Packers, however, are only 6-16-2 against the number in their last 24 games as a favorite of 10.5 points or more.

As far as the total is concerned, the over has been the play. These two have combined to finish over the total in five of the last six matchups.
