Washington Redskins at Detroit Lions NFL Odds & Lines

Written by Brad Marchetti on October 25, 2008

The Detroit Lions don’t have much, but the 0-6 Lions are still an NFL team that will need to be taken seriously by a formidable Washington Redskins squad. The Redskins will be careful not to let the Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions game slip by them like the 17-19 loss to St. Louis did just two weeks ago when they were -12. Redskins RB Clinton Portis is playing at an MVP level and will be tough to stop for a Lions defense that has been drilled by big plays. The NFL betting odds for the Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions game is Washington -7.5 to -9 on the SPREAD.

The Detroit Lions dismal 27th ranked offense led by QB Dan Orlovsky (72.9 passer rating) will be counted on to test the Reskins 8th ranked defense. Orlovsky (50 MPH Pass-Speed = 90 MPH Fastball) has an accurate arm, and will look for his strong 6′4″ 240 Lb. WR Calvin Johnson. Johnson (4.40 40-speed) will be counted on to test the Redskins hobbled DB’s. The Lions offense came to life late in the game last week in a spirited 21-28 loss to the Houston Texans as +11 dogs. Lions Head Coach Rod Marinelli was encouraged by the progress. “I feel that there were some things that were a lot better this week than in other weeks,” said coach Rod Marinelli, who’s 10-28 over three seasons, including 1-13 since Nov. 11. “I will have to go back and look at the tapes, but overall I feel that the progression of this team this week was a good one.” RB Kevin Smith (4.9 YPC. 352 TTL YDS 3 TD) has become the sleeper of the 2008 NFL draft. Smith (4.45 40-speed) ran in the same zone-blocking scheme in college and is now thriving in the NFL. The Washington Redskins were the main contributors in last week’s 14-11 win over Cleveland as -7 chalk. Redskins 6′4″ 320 Lb. DT Kedric Golston (500+ Lb. Bench-Press) recognized the blue-collar nature of the Washington defense. “Somebody’s got to do the dirty work,” said defensive tackle Kedric Golston, who batted away one of five passes deflected at the line of scrimmage. “And we take just as much pride in doing the dirty work as we do making the play.” Lions QB Dan Orlovsky will need to be extra careful when he goes deep against a Redskins defense that is excellent at disguising coverages.

If the Detroit Lions want to pull off the upset as heavy underdogs they will need to keep this game close. The Lions near invisible defense, ranked last in the NFL, will be faced with 2 All-Pro’s in Washington QB Jason Campbell (96.3 passer rating) and RB Clinton Portis (4.30 40-speed). “There are times when there are big holes and there are times when there is not much of a hole and Clinton is making a great cut, making a great move,” right tackle Jon Jansen told the team’s official Web site. “That’s why they call it a team game. Sometimes we make him look good, sometimes he makes us look good. All we care about is, in the end, winning the game.” Counted on to provide support against Portis will be the Lions leading tackler OLB Ernie Sims (4.40 40-speed 500+ Bench-Press). Detroit will need to play go for broke defense and blitz often. Detroit has only 1 INT and Redskins QB Jason Campbell has 0 INT’s in 202 pass attempts this season. The NFL betting odds OVER\UNDER for the Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions game is at 42.5 points.

Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis will go after the Lions and try and to gradually rub them out. Lions QB Dan Orlovsky will have to play a near perfect game for Detroit to win. The NFL betting odds for the Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions game is Washington -314 to -345 on the MONEYLINE.
