With four teams making exits after Wild Card Weekend, the playoff field is down to eight teams. According to BetUS NFL odds makers, the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be meeting in the Super Bowl. The Giants are the favorites to win at +275 and the Steelers are listed at +400.

Longshot lovers will feast their eyes on the Arizona Cardinals, listed at +3000 at BetUS. While the value is good, bettors will have to decide if they are just giving their money away on a team that is a 10-point underdog to the Carolina Panthers, +450 to win the Super Bowl, in Saturday’s NFC Divisional matchup. While the Cardinals have noticeably struggled in the eastern time zone, they did play the Panthers as tough as anyone did in Charlotte this season. They also have a former Super Bowl winning QB, Kurt Warner, playing like he did nearly a decade ago when he was winning NFL MVP awards.

Many experts are speculating that the winner of this Sunday’s Eagles versus Giants matchup will decide which team represents the NFC in the Super Bowl and I’m ready to jump on that bandwagon. The Eagles are listed at +750 to win the Super Bowl. Making your NFL picks on Philadelphia have paid off down the home stretch as the Eagles enter the divisional round as one of the hottest teams in the league. The Eagles have now won five of their last six games and one of those wins was in New York against the Giants a month ago. The reason why we even breathe life into teams like the Eagles and the Chargers having a shot is because of teams like the Giants and the Steelers. Pittsburgh faced a slew of do-or-die games to make the playoffs in the 2005 season and they went on to navigate their way to a Super Bowl title. And of course, the Giants had to get the job done on the road on their way to winning the Super Bowl last season. As four-point favorites, the books have the Giants advancing to a second straight NFC title game.

Odds makers are giving the Pittsburgh Steelers the edge to make it to the Super Bowl out of the AFC, despite Tennessee being the No. 1 overall seed. The Titans are listed at +550 to win the Super Bowl. Part of that is because the Titans are facing a challenging Ravens team this weekend and part of that is because the Steelers have more postseason success in recent years. But Tennessee has been playing the card that it has not received enough respect all season long and I expect the Titans to continue to play that card in the postseason. They do have all the intangibles that it takes to win it all. They have a strong running game and a strong defense, just like the Giants did last season. What it came down to for New York was Eli Manning making big plays went it counted and that will hold true for veteran QB Kerry Collins, who likely never thought he’d be starting in the NFL again, let alone be in position to make a Super Bowl run.

The San Diego Chargers are listed at +900 to win the Super Bowl and they are the longshot of the AFC. But they appear to be showing some solid value considering that they played in the AFC title game a season ago and were among the preseason favorites to win it all. They are a six-point underdog this week to a Steelers team which only beat them by a single point during the regular season.

1.  Look to pick the straight up winner of the game.
-This means you should basically ignore the point spread when it comes to bowl games.  The lines simply does not come into play as much in bowl games as it does in the regular season.  The straight up winner usually ends up covering the spread.  Edge: Florida.

2.  Underdogs thrive in December, but favorites win in the New Year.
-In the smaller bowl games it’s much more likely for an upset than in those bigger bowls after December 31st.  Iowa, Georgia, UConn, Tulsa, USC, and Texas all won as favorites in 2009.  Edge: Florida.

3.  Consider underdogs seeking redemption.
-You’ll have to be careful with this one.  There’s a fine line between a team that did not make expectations this year trying to redeem themselves, and those teams that are disappointed in the bowl game they are in and come out flat.  Edge: None.

4.  Respect the running game.
-I haven’t found this to be as true this season, but as a rule, a team with a strong rushing attack in very dangerous in the post-season.  Edge: Florida.

5.  Avoid the disinterested or disappointed favorite.
-This makes me think of Alabama this year.  They thought they should be national champs and didn’t come prepared for Utah in the Sugar Bowl.  Edge: None.

10. Consider experience and other intangible factors.
-For example, Oklahoma has 13 returning starters this year and 42 returning letterman compared to 16 returning starters and 52 returning letterman for the Gators.  Also, Tim Tebow and the Gators have been in this situation recently, it’s been awhile for the Sooners.  Edge: Florida.

Perhaps the San Diego Chargers, which finished the regular season at 8-8, are a team of destiny. San Diego avenged an earlier season loss to the Indianapolis Colts to eliminate them from the playoffs last Saturday and to move into the divisional round. If the Chargers want to reach the AFC title game for a second straight year, they’ll have to get pas another team which defeated them during the regular season. San Diego lost 11-10 at Heinz Field back in November. While the Chargers have been playing with nothing to lose for quite some time after getting off to a 4-8 start, NFL odds makers feel their time is up and have listed the Pittsburgh Steelers as 6-point favorites with the total set at 37.5.

Doing your NFL betting on the Chargers has likely gotten backers in trouble this season. Coming in as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, money line players took a beating early and likely didn’t stick around to see how things would turn out. The Chargers have come around, covering the spread in four of their last five games and are above .500 for the first time all season.

If the Chargers are going to have a chance at beating the Steelers this Sunday, they’ll likely have to score more than the 10 points they scored in the prior meetings. Much of that falls on QB Philip Rivers. Rivers was good enough against the Colts last week, but not great. He was 20 of 36 for 217 yards with no touchdown passes. He’ll have to be better against a superior Steelers defense.

It’s been a tough season for the Chargers running game as L.T. has been bugged by injuries throughout. He tried to lace ‘em up last week, but he only managed five carries before not being able to return to the game. Luckily for San Diego, backup Darren Sproles was ready for the spotlight. Sproles scooted for 105 yards and two scores.

While the San Diego defense held the Steelers to only 11 points in the earlier meeting, defense has been the problem for this team throughout. But they should be able to gain some confidence from playing Peyton Manning and the Colts very well last Saturday. The Chargers brought pressure all day and held Manning to only one touchdown pass. San Diego was solid against the run last week, holding Joseph Addai and the Colts running attack to just 64 yards on the ground, though Indy didn’t appear too interested in running. Making your NFL picks on the Steelers has been a profitable betting strategy this season. Pittsburgh is 12-4 straight up and 9-7 against the number heading into this one. The Steelers are 6-2 at home and will have home field to its advantage in this one. Pittsburgh is 8-3 straight up and against the spread in the last 11 meetings in this series and 5-1 straight up and 4-2 against the spread at home during that span.

While the Chargers have had their issues with defense, Pittsburgh has had its with offense. The Steelers scored fewer than 20 points six times and did so in two of their final three games of the regular season. Injuries plagued QB Ben Roethlisberger throughout the year and his numbers sufference because of it. Big Ben threw just 17 touchdown passes and had nearly as many picks (15). The offensive line figured to be a problem area heading in and it was. Big Ben was sacked 46 times to prove it. Despite a down season, he was still great when it mattered the most, engineering five game winning touchdown drives.

The line has really taken its toll on what was a great running attack last season. This year the Steelers rank 23rd in the NFL, averaging just 3.7 yards per carry. Injuries to Pro Bowler Willie Parker and rookie Rashard Mendehall also contributed to a tough year on the ground for Pittsburgh.

The defense has picked up the slack all season long and that’s what Pittsburgh will depend on to get them to the Super Bowl. The Steelers were the No. 1 overall defense in the NFL this season and also finished No. 1 against the pass. Pittsburgh wasn’t too shabby against the run either, finishing just 54 yards short of also being the No. 1 ranked run unit. They only allowed 3.29 yards per carry though, and that was tops in the league. It looks like it’s going to be a challenge for the Chargers to score in Heinz Field again. If you think Pittsburgh can come up with enough points to cover, bet the Steelers at -6 at BetUS.

What’s been impressive about both of these teams is their ability to score at will on offense, while maintaining a solid defense.  Orlando averages 100.2 points per game and allows just 93.1 points per game, while the Hawks average 98.2 points per game (100.1 ppg at home) and allow 94.9 points per game (93.4 ppg at home).  With the Hawks playing on their home hardwood, these teams are very evenly matched.  The teams have met just once this season, with the Hawks walking into Orlando and defeating the Magic 99-85 as 8.5 point underdogs.

Tonight the Magic have a chance to revenge that loss, and I think they get the job done.  Atlanta has been great, but the Magic have a slight edge with revenge on their mind tonight.

The New Orleans Hornets try to maintain their momentum from a huge win over the Lakers in L.A. last night as they face another strong home team tonight in the Utah Jazz.  Utah has had some ups and downs against the Hornets in the past, but one thing is for sure, and that is that the Jazz are one of the best home teams in the NBA.  They are 13-4 in Utah with a solid 10-7 record against the point spread.  New Orleans has won more than they’ve lost on the road this year (10-6), which is a good thing, but they’ve covered the spread in just 7 of their 16 road games this season.

Give the edge to the Jazz for their outstanding play at home this year.  Utah scores nearly 3 points more per game at home, and allows nearly 3 points per game less, a solid 6 point swing.  New Orleans stays strong on offense on the road, but they’ve shown a slight dip in the ability to shoot from three-point range away from their home court.  Look for rebounds to be a major factor in tonight’s game, with the Jazz holding a significant edge in both defensive and offensive boards.  The Jazz get it done, coming in just over the number.

Cleveland Cavaliers/Charlotte Bobcats UNDER 182.5

The Bobcats were one of my free plays last night. They pulled off an upset win over Boston in OT as a 9-point underdog. We’ll use that game against the Cats here as tired legs will be conducive to an under play tonight in this matchup with the Cavs. Also, history is in our favor here. In two previous meetings this season, these teams have totaled 175 and 168 points with the Bobcats not making in over 80 points in either game. The public loves the over and they have quickly bet this line up from 178 to 182.5 and that is definitely bringing a smile to the face of odds makers. I have uncovered a system for this one that cannot be ignored as the Cavs are 229-26 under when they allow 86 or fewer points in a game since 1996. The average score in these games has totaled just 167.7 points over the last 13 years. Bet the Cavs/Bobcats Under 182.5 at Bookmaker.

Denver Nuggets -5

The Miami Heat are a long ways from home as they start a seven-game road trip tonight in Denver. The Heat are just 6-9 straight up and against the spread on the road this season. Denver has been one of the better home teams in the NBA with a 13-4 straight up mark and a 10-6 against the spread record. Denver has also had Miami’s number, winning each of the last four matchups and covering the spread in three of those. That includes a perfect 2-0 straight up and against the spread mark at home over the last three seasons. The Nuggets will have to get it done without Carmelo tonight but I don’t see that as a problem now that Chauncey Billups is in town and now that Denver is playing better defensively. Offensively, Denver is scoring 107.1 points per game at home while the Heat are scoring only 95.2 points per game on the road. Bet the Denver Nuggets at -5 at BetUS.

Memphis Grizzlies +4

The Nets are only 7-12 straight up and against the spread at home this season and yet the public has fallen in love tonight. We’ve had some success fading the Nets at home this season and we’ll put it to the test again here. Memphis has been next to pathetic on the road, but it always plays the Nets tough. Memphis has won each of the past two meetings by seven points outright as an underdog in this series and it has covered the spread in seven of the last 11 meetings in New Jersey. Point guard Devin Harris is being bothered by a hamstring injury and is questionable for this game. Even if he goes, he will not be at full strength and that gives the big edge to Memphis. Bet the Memphis Grizzlies at +4 at BetUS.

NBA: 2-0

The stakes weren’t really any higher in last Sunday’s Wild Card matchup with Minnesota than they had been as the Eagles have been playing do-or-die football for quite some time now. Philadelphia used the momentum it created by winning four of its final five games to come up with a 26-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Now, the Eagles will have to face NFC East rival and defending Super Bowl champion New York to decide which team heads to the NFC championship game. The New York Giants are 4-point favorites with the total set at 40.

The Eagles knew they had to stop the run to win last week and that they did. Outside of a 40-yard touchdown run in the second quarter by Adrian Peterson, the Eagles shut down the All-Pro, holding him to just 43 yards on his other 19 carries. The mission will be the same for the Eagles this week as the Giants have an even stronger running attack with more than one weapon to turn to. The Eagles have had success against the G-Men, and particularly Eli Manning. The Eagles held Manning to a low 51.7 percent completion rate and he averaged only 5.41 yards per attempt in the two regular season games. With last Sunday’s victory, the Eagles have held the opposing QB to a less than 50 percent completion rate as its nasty blitz packages have been a nightmare for the opposition.

Offensively, the Eagles know they need to be sharper than they were a week ago, especially QB Donovan McNabb who turned the ball over twice. He played strong in the second half completing 12 of 15 passes, but he’s going to have to put together an entire game to take down the mighty Giants. The running game can stand to do more work as well. Getting yards on the ground is only going to help McNabb out in keeping the vaunted Giants pass rushers from breathing down his neck. Minnesota held the Eagles to just 2.9 yards per carry on the ground.

The Eagles beat the Giants just about one month ago in New York and they will be able to draw confidence from that. If you like Philly to take down the defending Super Bowl champs, bet the Eagles at +4 at Bookmaker and receive a 20% cash sign up bonus.

While the New York Giants might put up a strong front and say that it doesn’t matter who they play, I’m sure they would have rather played the Vikings than the Eagles. Giants come into this game having lost three of its last four games while the Eagles are red hot with five wins in their last six contests. Philly played New York tough in both matchups this year and dominated them worse than the score would have you believe in a December 7th matchup in New York.

The Giants have gained plenty of experience from last season’s run to the title and have also benefited from an extra week of rest with several banged up players, though.

Offensively, the Giants will hope that QB Eli Manning can play as well as he did in the 2008 playoffs. Manning had his best season as a pro, throwing fewer picks, tallying a higher completion percentage, and a better passer rating. He was able to do all that without much help from go-to wideout Plaxico Burress. Burress missed time throughout the season and then missed the final four games due to shooting himself in the leg - it might as well have been the foot.

The Giants running game is what makes everything else tick offensively. If New York is able to run the ball on the Eagles, it will likely be a long day for Philly fans. Both Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward broke the 1,000-yards mark for the season as the Giants set a franchise record with 2,518 rushing yards on the year.

New York’s defense, and particularly its pass rush, were the biggest reasons for its postseason success a year ago. While Michael Strahan retired, the Giants did not lose a step with Justin Tuck, who earned a Pro Bowl berth with 13 sacks. The Giants were dealt another blow with the loss of Osi Umenyiora, but Mathias Kiwanuka stepped up with an 8.5-sack campaign. The Giants came up with 10 less sacks than they did a season ago, but they were still among the best in the league in that department. Their pass rush also helped produce two more interceptions than it did a season ago. This will be the most important aspect of the defense Sunday as McNabb’s ability to get hot through the air poses the largest threat to New York. If you like the reigning Super Bowl champs to move one step closer to defending their crown, bet the Giants at -4 at Bookmaker.

While it’s a crap shoot for the most part (a lot of prop bets are), you probably have a pretty good idea who scores the most touchdowns for each team on the field Thursday night.  You can bet on the player to score the first touchdown of the game in the BCS Championship.  Right now the overall favorite is Chris Brown of Oklahoma ( +450) with Tim Tebow following right behind ( +500), but that’s not saying much considering that “the field” (every player not listed) is at +500 odds as well.  If you want to get a little crazy and think the game will be a defensive struggle, you can also bet that there will be no touchdowns scored in the BCS Championship Game at +20000 odds, an intriguing, though highly-unlikely proposition.

A very interesting proposition is the margin of victory in the national title game.  The most likely outcome, according the Sportbook.com, is a victory of 1-3 points by the Florida Gators ( +350), followed by a victory of 4-6 points by the Gators ( +400), followed by a victory of 1-3 points by the Oklahoma Sooners ( +450).  All indications are that this will be a close game, as the odds get much bigger (more unlikely) as the margin of victory increases.  A win by 18-21 points by Florida is given +1200 odds and a win by the same margin from Oklahoma is given +2000 odds.

You can also bet on how many yards Tim Tebow will have passing in the BCS Championship game.  Oddsmakers project that Tebow’s most likely output will be between 220 and 229 passing yards ( +250), while it’s unlikely he only throws for 190-199 yards ( +1000).

For Sam Bradford the props are a little bit different.  You can bet on how many completions the Oklahoma quarterback, and Heisman Trophy winner, will have in the big game.  The best odds fall right on 27 completions ( +250), while Bradford having less than 22 completions or more than 32 completions come in at a whopping +1200 odds.

For the MVP of the game Tim Tebow, unsurprisingly, is the favorite to win the award ( +300), with Bradford coming in a close second ( +350).  Other candidates include Chris Brown of Oklahoma ( +600) and Percy Harvin of Florida ( +500) (provided that he plays in the game).

If the Arizona Cardinals are going to have a chance at winning the Super Bowl, they know they are going to have to win on the East Coast and that has been much easier said than done. The Cardinals are 0-5 in the Eastern time zone this season and have already lost 27-23 at Carolina this season. NFL odds makers have listed the Carolina Panthers as 10-point favorites with the total set at 48.5.

Since 2003, the Cards are just 2-19 when playing in the East and that’s a big reason why they have opened as such hefty dogs. Still, Arizona should be able to take away something from playing Carolina as tough as anyone in its home turf this season, where the Panthers are 8-0. They have had some embarrassing losses in the East, but they actually led by 13 points in the third quarter against the Panthers before giving it away.

The Cards did what few expected they could do to win their Wild Card matchup with the Falcons; they ran the football. Edgerrin James looked like his old self and racked up 73 yards with a 4.6 yards per carry average to carve even more room for the passing game. QB Kurt Warner is playing like he did 10 years ago when he was among the best QB’s in football. His ability to throw the long ball is always a threat and he has touchdown passes of 71 and 42 yards against the Falcons. When the running game is working even a little, it gives the Cards the ability to hit on their big plays almost effortlessly threw the air.

Arizona’s defense has been much maligned but it was able to rattle rookie QB Matt Ryan. The Cards picked him off twice and sacked him three times and didn’t let big play wide receiver Roddy White get behind the secondary. They also held one of the NFL’s elite rushing offenses to just 60 yards on the ground. If you think Arizona will be up to the challenge again, bet the Cardinals at +10 at BetUS.

There is plenty of excitement in North Carolina as this year’s Panthers team gives the state its best chance of bringing home a Super Bowl ring since the 2003 team, which lost in the big game to the New England Patriots. The Panthers did reach the NFC title game in 2005 but were clubbed 34-14 by the Seahawks.

It should be an easier task to get back to the Super Bowl this time around with a bye week and now home field in its divisional game. While Arizona played solidly against the run in its win over the Falcons, the Panthers have been able to run over just about everyone this season. Carolina finished the season averaging 152.3 yards per game on the ground and has a NFL-high 29 rushing touchdowns. DeAngelo Williams had a sensational season rushing for 1,515 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns. Rookie Jonathan Stewart set team rookie records rushing for 836 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jake Delhomme’s numbers weren’t Pro Bowl material, but his ability to lead and his ability to make big throws late in games when it matters most cannot be questioned. Carolina threw the ball fewer times than anyone else in the NFL, but it would not be smart for the Cards to sleep on this passing attack which features one of the best receivers in football - Steve Smith. Smith averaged more than 100 yards per game is making a Pro Bowl trip.

Defensively, the Panthers weren’t as good as they have been in year’s past and they will likely be somewhat concerned with seeing Warner again, who lit them up for more than 370 yards. The rushing defense has not been as good as desired either. They gave up 301 yards to the Giants in a game which decided the No. 1 seed in the NFC. No one expects Arizona to get that kind of yardage on the ground, but like you saw in its game against the Falcons, a little bit goes a long way. If you like Carolina to crush the Cards, bet the Panthers at -10 at BetUS.

Since this is a new article that I’m going to be posting each day, I just want to let all you readers know that these plays are not as strong as the ones that I list on the premium side and that I do not wager on these plays. Oklahoma City Thunder +2

The Thunder have covered the spread in seven of their last eight games and also in 16 of their last 21. The Knicks are only 5-11 on the road this season and coming off a big win over Boston. This one has letdown written all over it for the Knicks, which also do not have the benefit of as much rest as the Thunder. OKC may only have four wins on the year, but lately they have been a great home dog and we will take them in that role again.

Charlotte Bobcats +9

Boston is in as big of a rut as we’ve seen the past two seasons having lost four of its last six games. When this team is talking about picking up the disease that is Starbury, something just isn’t right. I think the Celtics will play their way out of it and a win tonight will go along way toward doing so, but they are not in a good spot to cover this number. While Boston has won 6 of 9 meetings between these teams over the last 3 seasons, it is Charlotte that is 7-2 ATS in those games. Also, Charlotte has already played the Celtics to a five point game at home this season. I also cannot forget to mention that the underdog is a perfect 11-0 ATS in the last 11 meetings. Michael Jordan wills his boys to fight hard tonight to keep this one close.
