New Orleans Saints at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Odds & Picks

The Saints were the odds on favorites to win the NFC South division prior to the start of the season but poor play on the road has them currently bringing up the rear. New Orleans looks to get back to .500 this week when it pays a visit to 1-8 Kansas City, but it likely won’t be easy as the Saints are yet to win away from home this season (not counting neutral field game in England). Odds makers have listed the Saints as 5.5-point favorites with the total set at 50.5.
New Orleans isn’t out of the playoff picture yet and has been known to make strong second half runs, but it currently trails all of the other NFC South teams by at least three games. The Saints will likely need to win at least five of their remaining seven games to have any hope of a postseason berth and could be too much to ask for a team that has not won consecutive game all season. New Orleans fell to division rival Atlanta 34-20 last Sunday to drop to 0-4 on the road. QB Drew Brees leads the NFL’s top-ranked offense, which is gaining 422.2 yards per game. He’s on pace to throw for a record-setting 5,309 yards, but the road has not been nearly as kind to the All-Pro. Brees has just four touchdowns against six interception in four road games this season compared to 13 scores against just four picks in home games. Last Sunday, Brees was 31 of 58 for 422 yards with two touchdowns but he also through a season-high three picks. With Reggie Bush still recovering from a knee injury, the Saints’ offense has relied on throwing the football. Perhaps a date with Kansas City, which has allowed anaverage of 316 passing yards in its last three games, will get the Saints their first road win of the season. Bet the Saints at -5.5 if you think they break through this week.
As if things weren’t already bad enough for a rebuilding defense, a case of the injury big figures to hold the Chiefs back even further. Linebackers Derrick Johnson and Pat Thomas and defensive end Brian Johnston are listed as out for this game. Kansas City is coming off of a heartbreaking loss to San Diego last Sunday, losing 20-19. The week before, the Chiefs took Tampa Bay to overtime before losing 30-27. Kansas City has a chance to win last week’s game as a 3-yard touchdowns catch by Tony Gonzalez pulled the Chiefs within one with 23 ticks left in the game. Coach Herman Edwards decided to go for the win by trying a two point conversion which failed. While the Chiefs have lost five in a row and have just one win in their last 18 games, one can help but notice the improvement thanks to the solid play of QB Tyler Thigpen. Thigpen started the season not even on the radar as Kansas City’s third-string quarterback before injuries ended the seasons of Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle. Thigpen threw for 128 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in his first start, but has passed for 710 yards, six TDs and no picks in his last three. The Chiefs should get some extra help with the return of All-Pro running back Larry Johnson this week. The two-time Pro Bowl running back, who rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns in Kansas City’s lone win will give the Saints defense another offensive weapon to account for. If you think Kansas City is ready to challenge for another win, bet the Chiefs at +5.5 at Bookmaker and get a 20% cash sign up bonus.
