New Orleans Saints at Minnesota Vikings Spread

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 13, 2011

The New Orleans Saints (10-3) will be gunning for a sixth straight victory when they visit the Minnesota Vikings (2-11) Sunday.

The Saints are currently a seven-point favorite with the total set at 51.

Drew Brees connected on 36 of 47 pass attempts for 337 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in last Sunday’s 22-17 road win over the Tennessee Titans.

Seven passes, including both touchdown tosses, found the hands of Marques Colston, who led the team with 105 receiving yards.

Christopher Ivory led the way on the ground with 53 of the team’s 114 rushing yards.

The Vikings saw their losing streak extend to five games with Sunday’s 34-28 road loss to the Detroit Lions.

Christian Ponder completed 11 of 21 passes for 115 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions before being replaced by Joe Webb, who completed 12 of 23 throws for 84 yards and a touchdown. Webb also rushed for 109 yards and a score on seven carries.

Percy Harvin led the team in receiving with 10 catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.

The Minnesota defense has been susceptible to the pass all season, which could be a major problem Sunday if something doesn’t change.

The Vikings, who enter Week 15 ranked 26th in the NFL with 248.8 passing yards allowed per game, face the difficult task of slowing down New Orleans’ league-leading passing attack, which averages 325.2 yards per contest.

Brees leads the NFL with 4,368 passing yards and ranks third in touchdown passes (32) and passer rating (105.9).

Minnesota was able to stay in the game against Detroit thanks to 269 rushing yards. It will likely take another big day on the ground for the Vikings to hang around this week.

Minnesota’s rushing attack could get an added boost if star running back Adrian Peterson is able to go. Peterson, who hasn’t played since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 11, is currently listed as probable.

The Vikings have won eight of the last 11 in this series, but the Saints have won the last two, including a 14-9 home win in the most recent meeting on Sept. 9, 2010.

The Saints have been a solid investment. They are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games and 9-4 against the number on the season.

The Vikings are 5-6-2 against the spread on the season and 1-3-1 against the number the last five weeks.

It is worth noting, however, the Saints are 1-5 against the spread in their last six meetings with the Vikings.

In regard to the total, the over has been the play. These two have combined to finish over the total in five of the last six matchups. The over is also 3-0-1 in the last four in Minnesota.
