San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Browns NFL Picks & Spreads

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 3, 2009

The 8-3 San Diego Chargers look to increase their lead in the AFC West when they take on the 1-10 Cleveland Browns this Sunday in an AFC West versus North clash. In Week 12, the Chargers demolished the Chiefs 43-14 while the Browns fell to rival Cincinnati 16-7. These teams last met in the 2006 season with the Chargers winning 32-25 behind a 172-yard, three touchdown performance by LaDainian Tomlinson. That win was the sixth in the last seven meetings for San Diego, which leads the all-time series 13-7-1. NFL odds makers have listed the San Diego Chargers as a 13-point favorite with the total set at 43.

The Chargers are 5-1 all-time against the Browns in December, but the Bolts don’t figure to be as suited for the conditions that are being projected in Cleveland for Sunday’s game. Temperatures are expected to be freezing and there is a chance of snow in the forecast. Over the last couple seasons, the Chargers have become more and more of a passing football team with Philip Rivers replacing L.T. as the face of the franchise.  But  such weather conditions could inhibit San Diego’s down the field passing attack and help the Browns stay within striking distance in the process.

It’s time for Brady Quinn to start living up to his first-round draft status. If he is able to play well down the stretch, it could go a long way toward inking himself in as the starter next year and as the future of the franchise. He is an Ohio kid who’s used to these type of weather conditions  and that should play to his benefit. It is worth noting that the Chargers are just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite of 10.5 or more points. If you think Cleveland can keep this one within the number on a cold day, bet the Browns at +13 at Bodog.

The Chargers appear to be well on their way to another playoff appearance unless they were to undergo a horrific collapse. They have a big game at Dallas up next so it will be important that they don’t get caught looking ahead here, especially since Denver, who is just a game back, has a very winnable game against the Chiefs.

If the playing conditions make it difficult for San Diego to stretch the field with Rivers’ arm, the Chargers may need the kind of game on the ground from L.T. that they got the last time these teams faced off. While San Diego is a throwing team these days, they have been nearly unstoppable when getting the running game going to provide some balance. In fact, the Chargers are a perfect 4-0 this season when they rush for at least 100 yards in a game.

Defensively, keep a close eye on outside linebacker Shaun Phillips. It has been Phillips more so than Shawne Merriman, who is questionable Sunday with a foot injury, who has provided the Chargers with a pass rush. Phillips has really come on strong with six sacks in San Diego’s last six games. It is worth noting that the Browns are just 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 home games. If you like San Diego to win big again this week, bet the Chargers at -13 at Bodog.
