San Diego Chargers at New York Giants NFL Week 9 Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

The 4-3 Chargers take on the 5-3 New York Giants in Week 9 in what some experts picked to be this season’s Super Bowl matchup. Last week, the Chargers got over the .500 mark with a 24-16 win over lowly Oakland while things got worse for the Giants, falling 40-17 to division rival Philly. These two teams haven’t met since the 2005 season when the Chargers cruised 45-23 behind a 192-yard performance from LaDainian Tomlinson. The Chargers have won two of the last three meetings but New York holds the 5-4 lead in the all-time series. NFL odds makers expect New York to get back on track this week, listing the Giants as a 4.5-point favorite with the total set at 47.5.

There’s no question that Chargers QB Philip Rivers will have to play well to give his team a chance Sunday. Rivers has thrown 11 touchdown strikes in his last five games against the NFC and he’s probably licking his chops right about now. The New York secondary has been torched by the deep ball the last three weeks. With the Giants not getting as much pressure on the QB, the secondary is being exposed. Few quarterbacks in football have as strong an arm as Rivers and few throw it down the field as well. Tight end Antonio Gates is a matchup nightmare for any defense. He leads all tight ends with 43 touchdown grabs since 2002. Don’t be surprised if he’s on the receiving end of a Philip Rivers touchdown strike Sunday.

Defensively, Antonio Cromartie may have the opportunity to be a game-changer for the Bolts. The former Pro Bowl corner isn’t having a Pro Bowl-type season thus far, but he has proven to be a playmaker in the past. With the way Eli Manning has struggled in recent weeks with six interceptions in his last three games, Cromartie may also be licking his chops. It is worth noting that the Chargers are 18-6-3 ATS in their last 27 games as an underdog. If you like San Diego in the dog role Sunday, bet the Chargers at +4.5 at Sportsbook.com.

The Giants got off to a 5-0 start and many experts were considering them the best team in football. They certainly have not looked like it the last 3 weeks. Basically, New York is not doing the things that has made it successful. It is turning the football over and it isn’t getting the heat on opposing QB’s that we are so used to seeing. Remember when Manning was struggling in the second half of the 2007-08 season? All of a sudden, he stopped turning the football over and the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl. The other thing about that team was that it got after the QB like few teams I have ever seen. If the Giants can get a big game from Justin Tuck, who leads the team in sacks, the chances of a victory are pretty good when you consider that they are 15-3 when Tuck gets a sack. Also, the Giants have won their last five games against the AFC. It is also worth noting that the Giants are an impressive 33-16-2 ATS in their last 51 games overall.  With backers being so used to cashing their tickets on New York, the last three weeks have been a killer.  If you think New York ends its losing streak Sunday and covers the spread in the process, bet the Giants at -4.5 at Sportsbook.com.
