San Francisco 49ers 2009 NFL Draft Needs

Written by Jimmy Boyd on April 21, 2009

49ers-42109Head coach Mike Singletary got his boys to play inspired football down the home stretch, winning four of their last five games. The 49ers will hope to use that momentum and a solid 2009 NFL Draft class to pick up right where they left off. Jimmy Boyd takes a look at the 49ers biggest needs, likely day one targets, and their recent draft track record in this 2009 NFL Draft preview.

Biggest Draft Needs – The 49ers could use an upgrade at right offensive tackle, which has been a weak spot for years now. Free agent pickup Marvel Smith can’t be counted on at right tackle with all the back issues he has been dealing with. Wide receiver is another big need as the Niners have not had a Pro Bowl caliber split end in town since Terrell Owens, which is pretty sad considering how great some of the 49ers’ wideouts have been throughout history. The 49ers could use an outside linebacker to bring the heat on defense and a quarterback has to be on the radar as well. Alex Smith is probably one season away from officially being classified as a bust in my book, and most have already penciled him in as one, but I’ll give him one more chance. He may not even get on the field for a chance to prove himself though as Shaun Hill is the front runner. Lastly, the 49ers have defensive backfield needs to address.

Likely Day 1 Targets
– With the No. 10 overall pick in the draft, I would recommend getting the best available player to fill a need, even if it’s not the most glaring one and that is the stance I anticipate the 49ers taking. They will surely be ready to pounce if a player like Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree unexpectedly slips. The 49ers need a playmaker at wideout who will keep teams from stacking the line against their running attack.

The 49ers likely won’t get a shot at offensive tackles Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe, but they could go with Alabama’s Andre Smith or Arizona’s Eben Britton. Going this rout doesn’t coincide with the philosophy of taking the best available however.

The 49ers also have to ask themselves if it’s time to roll the dice on another first round QB. I know the Alex Smith situation would give any team second thoughts, but the 49ers will have to at least consider taking USC QB Mark Sanchez if he falls.

The 49ers could look at drafting a defensive backfield guy like Ohio State’s Malcolm Jenkins who is expected to be around. He can play corner or safety and I have no doubts that he is going to be a Pro Bowler.

The 49ers have lots of directions they could go with this pick and another way I could see them going is the pass rusher rout. They could get a guy like Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin.

Recent Draft Track Record - GM Scot McCloughan’s first draft with total control was nothing to write home about. It looks as if only guard Chilo Rachal and wide receiver Josh Morgan will enjoy long careers. Right now Alex Smith looks like he is going to be on one of those biggest busts in history lists, but the 49ers have landed some good ones recently in running back Frank Gore and linebacker Patrick Willis.

After the way the last couple of years have gone, the 49ers better take Mark Sanchez if he is still available.

By the way things are looking as of right now I would say that our main need as of now is a tackle. We Gave 56 sacks last year which was the most in the NFL. In the second round I would try to get a big named receiver such as Brian Robinske from Ohio State. Later On I would draft another QB because there are a lot of good QB’s such as Graham Harell from Texas Tech. Michael Crabtree didn’t get there by his self. They won every game but 1 last year . Thank all who read the and take this into consideration.

49ers elected to fulfill wide receiver need early when Crabtree slipped. Can’t blame them.

honestly in my opinion i think mark sanchez is over rated. and i think he is going to end up as another matt leinart, as a 49er team they should honestly pick up an experience quarterback that can do the job. i know its younger the better and able to teach easier, but if you have a quarterback that is experience and that can do the job who can reach out and able to make throw’s to the type of recievers we have for the 49ers they can actually take the divison and maybe even higher. Therefore we should take anybody who can take us higher and higher and able do the job.

I definitely like the receiving corps now and Frank Gore can do it all out of the backfield. Bringing in an experienced veteran might be the right call at QB. All in all, the West is pretty weak and it shouldn’t be long before the Niners are challenging again.

Got something to say?
