Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers NFL Picks & Betting Odds
The Seattle Seahawks go head-to-head with NFC West rival San Francisco this Sunday afternoon at Monster Park in Week 2 action. Last week both teams got off to fast starts in division play with the Seahawks shutting out the Rams 28-0 and the 49ers besting the defending NFC champion Arizona Cardinals 20-16. These rivals last met in Week 8 of last season with the Seahawks cruising 34-13 in Mike Singletary’s debut as 49ers interim head coach. The Seahawks have won nine of the last 12 meetings and lead the all-time series 11-9. NFL odds makers are basically calling this one a toss up, listing the San Francisco 49ers as a slight 1.5-point favorite with the total set at 39.

Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck is back healthy in 2009 and the Seahawks appear poised to make a run at recapturing the division crown. The Seahawks have been the class of the NFC West and they have done it without Hasselbeck having great weapons to work with. The organization has done their part to bring more weaponry in and one of those guys is second-year tight end John Carlson. The former Notre Dame star led the team with six grabs for 95 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1. It will be interesting to see if he can improve on that performance against a strong 49ers linebacking unit this week. I also expect T.J. Houshmandzadeh to become a dangerous deep threat for the Seahawks as Hasselbeck and he become more familiar with one another. Defensively, keep an eye out for defensive end Patrick Kerney. He loves playing against the Niners and has a sack each of the last four times he’s faced them. It is worth noting that the Seahawks are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven meetings in San Francisco and the road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings. If you expect another dominant performance out of Seattle, bet the Seahawks at +1.5 at Bookmaker.
The San Francisco 49ers have been a completely different team since getting blown out by Seattle in Week 8 last season. You can bet they’ll be hungry to pay back their division rivals this week. It would appear they have the right guy under center to lead them to a big victory as QB Shaun Hill is an outstanding 8-3 as a starter. His numbers are not going to often wow you and neither is his athletic ability or arm, but the guy is a winner and that’s why coach Singletary is so big on him.
The defense will have to come up big against a Seahawks offense which looked pretty strong out of the gate. I expect San Francisco defensive back Nate Clements to be a key performer. Matt Hasselbeck, who learned behind Brett Favre before coming to Seattle, is known to get Brett Favre syndrome at times, meaning he tries to do to much. In fact, Hasselbeck has thrown 12 picks in his last eight games. Clements was able to come up with a pick last week and he just might be able to add to that total by making a big play against the Seahawks. It is worth noting that the Seahawks are 6-21-3 against the number in their last 30 games following a straight up win of more than 14 points and 0-5 against the spread in their last five games after allowing less than 15 points in their previous game. If you like San Francisco at home this week, bet the 49ers at -1.5 at Bookmaker.
