2008 SEC Basketball Predictions & Picks
SEC East
The Florida Gators will have a lot of new faces, but they will be good ones. I learned a long time ago not to underestimate what Billy Donovan can do with a group of young, talented basketball players.
Tennessee’s backcourt gets a total makeover from last season. That, coupled with more difficult 3-point shots will slow down the Vols a little, but only a little. Tyler Smith is still one of the best players in the country.
Kentucky may take awhile to shake off some cobwebs again this year, but last year’s slow start turned into an impressive second half.
South Carolina still has a long way to go to compete with the top three teams in the SEC East, but they are the best of the second-tier teams in this half of the conference.
The Georgia Bulldogs actually won the SEC Tournament last year. Don’t expect a repeat. It was a great story, but not one that will be repeated in 2008-09.
Vanderbilt won’t be bad, but they will struggle to compete in the conference as they have no seniors on their starting roster. They might surprise some people and break into the 4th or 5th in in the East, but inexperience is a killer against the talent they will be up against.
Out of all of the teams in the SEC East, Tennessee has been given the best chance at winning an NCAA Title at +2000 odds.
SEC West
LSU gets a new coach in Trent Johnson this year. Johnson should inject some excitement in an LSU has had the talent, but has lacked the intensity and leadership to compete the last two years.
Alabama will compete for the SEC Title this year. They have one of the best returning classes in the conference and should find themselves in the NCAA Tournament come March.
Like so many programs early on, Ole Miss has more questions than answers. A new frontcourt will be an adjustment, but the Rebels should fair reasonably well in the West.
Auburn has virtually no presence inside and Coach Jeff Lebo may turn to an all-guard lineup like he did last year. Don’t underestimate the impact of the more difficult three-point shots for teams like Auburn. The Tigers are likely to struggle.
Arkansas doesn’t have the confidence of a program that was once one of the most feared in the nation. The Razorbacks won’t be terrible, but they’ll find it difficult to keep up in the West this year.
Mississippi State has been a surprise the last two seasons, grabbing Western Division titles in both. This year they have just two seniors on the roster and the rest of the league is much improved.
LSU and Alabama have both been given +10000 odds to win the NCAA Tournament this year.
