SEC Power Rankings: Tigers on Top

Written by Jimmy Boyd on February 3, 2009

sec-power1. LSU Fighting Tigers (17-4)
LSU is rolling again like it was when it had Big Baby Davis a few years back. The Tigers have won 5 of their last 6, with that lone loss coming in non-conference play to a good Xavier team. I’m looking forward to LSU’s February 24 matchup with Florida.

2. South Carolina Gamecocks (16-4)

The Gamecocks have won 4 in a row, including big wins over Florida and Kentucky. Devan Downey and his 19.8 points per game scoring average has been a big story in the league. SC will have to bring its “A” game as the Gators will be after revenge tonight. South Carolina is an 8-point underdog tonight against Florida.

3. Florida Gators (18-4)
Florida is as talented as any team in this league but it is just 2-2 over its last 4 games with losses South Carolina and Tennessee. The Gators will get a chance to avenge one of those losses tonight when they face the Gamecocks.

4. Kentucky Wildcats (16-6)
Kentucky has lost 2 in a row, including a 1-point heart breaker to South Carolina, but it is very deserving of this spot. This team played Louisville to a 3-point game and torched the Vols by 18 on the road. And no player of the year discussion is complete, in my opinion, without Jodie Meeks.

5. Tennessee Volunteers (13-7)
Tennessee has been a big disappointment this season as many expected them to be the team to beat in this conference. This team has been in lots of games but just hasn’t found a way to pull them out. A big win over Florida last Saturday might just be what the Vols needed to get them going.

6. Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-7)
The Dogs have won 6 of their last 8 but a loss to rival Ole Miss in their last game certainly hurts, especially on their home floor. Life does not get any easier as they face Kentucky on the road tonight.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide (13-8)
Alonzo Gee and company have been in just about every game this season, but they have come out on the short end of the stick. The Tide do have a big win over LSU early in SEC play and that shows you what they are capable of.

8. Ole Miss Rebels (12-9)

Ole Miss is one of the best covering teams in the SEC at 11-6 against the spread. It has gotten the job done straight up of late as well with back-to-back wins over Kentucky and rivals Mississippi State.

9. Auburn Tigers (13-8)
The Tigers have won 3 of their last 5, including an impressive blowout win at Arkansas. Offensively, Auburn is nothing special, kind of like the football team, but the Tigers have brought their defense to win games, allowing their opponents to score just 62.5 points per game.

10. Arkansas Razorbacks (13-6)
Arkansas used its athletic ability to beat two of the Big 12’s elite (Oklahoma and Texas), but it has not showed up in the SEC, losing 5 of its last 6. It should be a fun one Wednesday night with Tennessee coming to town.

11. Vanderbilt Commodores (13-8)
Vandy has lost 4 of its last 5, but did win in its last game against Auburn. Hopefully the Dores will be able to build on that win when they face Alabama at home Thursday.

12. Georgia Bulldogs (9-12)

The Dawgs are the only team in the SEC without double digit wins and also the only team without a winning record on the season. The Dawgs have lost 8 in a row and they figure to have a rough road ahead adjusting to a new coach. Dennis Felton was on a short leash after leading the Dawgs to a SEC Tournament title last season.
