Second Half Betting

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 16, 2008

During the football season, halftimes are the most hectic time of the week since a lot of games are ending at the same time. This is especially true for the early games, when bookmakers are then forced to set the second half betting lines for all the games on the board, then manage these odds as the action rolls in. Expert sports handicappers like you will find here at Locksmith Sports, and professional gamblers look for weak numbers in order to make money. Some bettors are looking to load up on the second half since they watched the first half closely, others are loading up to hedge their bets on the overall game.

Since most games hit halftime around the same time, the bookies only have a few minutes to decide the line on a lot of different games. If they make the wrong choice on a single one then the smart money can move in and take advantage. Betting on halftimes can draw just as much action as the early morning rush, so the odds makers really have to be paying attention. The lines maker doesn’t like to move the line too much, that defeats the purpose of trying to set an accurate line and eliminating risk. As soon as you have a flaw in the number though, the big bettors are ready to pounce.

A lot of online sportsbooks will wait as the bigger books post their number, get pounded, then adjust. Once the numbers are adjusted, the rest of the industry will follow suit, thinking that the risk has been taken away. According to the books that actually start out posting the number, there are a few different criteria they use. The original line is the first consideration, as is the result of the first half of the game. You will also see the odds affected by the action on the full game as they may try to adjust the number to even out their exposure on the game.

Most books get more action on the second half then they do with first half betting. The reason is that the public likes to watch the game to see how it goes, then they try to hedge or middle their bets. If their side is winning, then it might give them more incentive to take the same team for the second half too. Professional gamblers on the other hand bet more on the first half than they do on the second half. This is because those numbers are available all week long, whereas the second half line is only up for 15 minutes or so. Generally the public takes into account the first half and thinks that is going to determine what happens in the second, but that’s underestimating the coaches ability to make adjustments.

One thing about second half betting is that, since the public is so much of a factor, you will get the value in going against them. The books overvalue the favorite in the 2nd half since that is where the large amount of public money is going to come in. If the underdog was playing well, then you can keep jumping on them in the second half and normally make some money, especially when talking about NFL betting.
