Sony Open Odds & Predictions

Written by Jason Lowry

sony-open-predictions-011309The 2009 PGA TOUR is officially underway, as Geoff Ogilvy was able to hold of K.J. Choi and Davis Love III at the Mercedes-Benz Championship last week in Hawaii. For many of the golfers it will require little travel this week, as the PGA TOUR stays in Hawaii for the 2009 Sony Open. Last year Choi was the dominant golfer shooting 14 under to win by 3 shots of runner up Rory Sabbatini. Golfers will be tackling Waialae course one this weekend, and if they want to have some success they better make sure they are hitting the fairways and greens, as Waialae is a very tight course. There are a number of solid golfers in action this week, and to help you get a little more familiar with the field, we have broken the field down into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots who have a shot at winning this weekend.

Favorites: Ernie Els +800, Geoff Ogilvy +1000, Davis Love III +1200, Kenny Perry +1800, and Rory Sabbatini +1800

Its pretty easy to see why this group has the best odds to win this weekend, especially the front runner Ernie Els, who hasn’t finished worse than 5th on this course, and has won this twice (2003, 2004). Ogilvy has the only win of the season, and Love III is playing some the best golf out of anybody since the end of the 2008 season. Kenny Perry could be on his way to another huge season, and don’t forget about Sabbatini who shot all four rounds in the 60’s last year at this course.

Middle of the Pack: Adam Scott +2000, KJ Choi +2000, Steve Stricker +2000, Tim Clark +2500, David Toms +2500, Luke Donald +3000, Sean O’Hair +3000, and Zach Johnson +3000

There is a ton of talent left over with some pretty good odds for your money this weekend. Scott is always a safe pick, and Choi is the defending champion, so you know his game plays fits well on this course. David Toms won this even back in 2006, and we really like what Luke Donald and Zach Johnson bring to the table in this one. If we had to pick just one golfer out of this group to surprise this weekend, it would be Scott, as we think its only a matter of time before this guy is one of the best in the game.

Long Shots: Pat Perez +4000, Jerry Kelly +4000, Charles Howell III +4000, Carl Pettersson +4000, Boo Weekley +4000, Steve Marino +5000, JB Holmes +5000, DJ Trahan +5000, Troy Matteson +5000, and Paul Goydos +8000

It’s never easy picking a long shot to win, but there are a couple guys in this group that we think have a good shot this weekend. First off Paul Goydos won this thing back in 2007, so he is a factor, but Perez, Kelly, Marino, and Matteson all finished in the top 10 last year, so they are also a threat in this one. If we had to pick a long shot, it would be Jerry Kelly who finished just 4 shots back last year, and also won this event back in 2002.
