South Carolina at Florida Football Odds & Picks
The third-ranked Florida Gators host the 24th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks this Saturday in a big game for both programs. Florida is one of the hottest teams in the nation and they are still very much in the conversation to make the BCS Championship game. South Carolina has been solid this year, but their struggles on offense have kept them out of any serious consideration in the SEC. Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier would love to knock off his former squad, but that’s probably wishful thinking on his part. Florida is a 23 point favorite over South Carolina this weekend with the total set at 50 points.
As previously mentioned, the South Carolina offense has been unimpressive this season. They are averaging a mediocre 24 points per game on 335 yards of total offense. Coach Spurrier has tried to push the running game, but it isn’t working for the Gamecocks, who average under three yards per rush. Their passing game can be good at times, but a lack of consistency, and far too many interceptions have made the passing game a liability as well. The Gamecocks are 23 point dogs this week.
This South Carolina defense has plenty to brag about. So far they are giving up just 15.6 points per game and only 256 total yards. When you factor in some of the talent they’ve faced this year, these number are even more significant. A concern for them this week will be keeping the defense rested enough to keep pace with the Florida offense, and that burden falls on the offense. If the offense can’t deliver, they will eventually get worn down enough for the Gators to take full advantage.
Florida’s offensive numbers are impressive to say the least. They are scoring 42 points per game on just over 400 yards of total offense. Florida QB Tim Tebow got off to a slow start this year, but he’s still a scoring machine with 17 TDs through air and 10 on the ground. Everyone knows about last year’s Heisman winner, but this team is littered with talent. This is, no doubt, one of the elite offensive attacks in the nation.
The offensive numbers for the Gators are impressive, but their stats on defense may be even better. Florida is allowing a mere 11.9 points per game and under 290 yards of total offense. The Gator’s secondary has been very impressive, picking off opposing quarterbacks 14 times so far this season. It’s going to be difficult for a South Carolina offense that is already struggling to find much daylight against the Gators defense. Florida is a 23 point favorite at home this week.
Florida has been destroying their opponents for the past 5 weeks. South Carolina has put together a good team this year and they have a respectable record to show for it, but the Gators are clearly a better team. Playing at home there’s little question that, when Florida is playing like they are right now, the Gators win easily.
