Auburn was supposed to be showing off it’s new spread offense in their opener against Louisiana-Monroe last Saturday, but the team was so dominant over their opponent it was tough to tell if the system helped or the talent was uneven as to which produced the results which led to a 34-0 win. It was more of the traditional Auburn ground and pound that moved the ball for the Tigers, as Ben Tate ran for 115 yards on 13 carries, freshman Eric Smith gained 66 yards and senior Brad Lester finished with 52, including a 3-yard touchdown, contributing to Auburn’s 321 total yards on the ground.
This week head coach Tommy Tuberville and company are hoping that they can get the passing game involved with the offense when they take on Southern Miss. Last year the Tigers Achilles heel was their air attack, which ranked 107th in the nation, leading them to a 101st rank in total yards. After Tuberville went out and hired Tony Franklin to help spark the offense the results were immediate. The Tigers piled on 423 yards in an exciting 23-20 overtime win against Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl to instill confidence that this year’s team was going to be able to move the ball and put points on the board. In the first game of the year though the passing game struggled mightily, with Kodi Burns and Chris Todd combining for just 28 yards through the air after three quarters, finishing with only 85 for the game. The team only picked up three first downs by throwing the ball. This week though Tuberville gave the starting nod to Todd, and the platoon system is on hold until Burns is fully recovered. Hopefully for Auburn fans, this means that Todd will be more relaxed, get into a rhythm, and not worried he’s going to get yanked if things don’t go right. As good as the Auburn rushing attack was last week, the Golden Eagles were even better. In Southern Miss’s 51-21 win over Louisiana-Lafayette, the team gained 427 yards rushing. Damion Fletcher ran for a career-high 222 of those yards and scored twice as the team set a school-record with 633 yards in total offense to mark the debut of their new head coach, Larry Fedora.
Southern Miss better not plan on seeing those same kinds of numbers again this week against the Tigers, who held Louisiana-Monroe to just 220 total yards last week, 84 of which were rushing.
