St. Louis Rams at Tennessee Titans NFL Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 10, 2009

The 1-11 St. Louis Rams take on the 5-7 Tennessee Titans Sunday in a Week 14 non-conference clash. Week 13 was one to forget for both teams as the Rams’ anemic offense lived up to its billing in a 17-9 loss to Chicago and the Titans saw their five-game winning streak come to an end in Indy. It’s been a while since these two teams last faced off with the Rams winning 31-27 back in the 2005 season behind a huge day from Marc Bulger. That win was the fourth in the last five meetings for the Rams who own a 7-3 lead in the all-time series. But NFL odds makers have Tennessee cutting into that lead Sunday, listing the Titans as a 13-point favorite with the total set at 41.5.

This game very well could come down to which stud running back performs better. Tennessee’s Chris Johnson leads the AFC in rushing with 1,509 yards and nine scores on 6.2 yards per carry. And St. Louis’ Steven Jackson leads the NFC in rushing with 1,232 yards and four touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry. Johnson brings the speed as he is capable of getting around the corner for big plays on any given carry. Jackson brings the power, rarely going down on first contact. Johnson has a good chance to go down as the best running back in the history of the franchise. He will take a small step toward that feat with just one rushing yard Sunday, as that is all he needs to pass Eddie George for the third-most rushing yards in a season in team history. Jackson has been as consistent a back in this league as there is and he will have an opportunity to break the century mark for the sixth time in the last seven games. It should be one hell of a duel.

St. Louis is going to try like hell to stop Tennessee’s powerful running game. That means that the airways could be open for Kenny Britt. Tennessee has been in desperate need of a No. 1 receiver since losing Derrick Mason back in 2005 and Britt seems to fit that mold. He has quickly built chemistry with QB Vince Young and has 36 grabs for 567 yards and three scores on the season. The thing that really jumps out at me is that he’s averaging 15.8 yards per catch. Tennessee may look to stretch the field with Britt Sunday if St. Louis cheats too many guys into the box. It is worth noting that a win Sunday would be Tennessee’s eighth straight against the NFC. It is also worth noting that the Titans are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite of 10.5 or more points. If you like Tennessee to win by at least 14 points, bet the Titans at -13 at Bodog.

St. Louis’ offense has struggled to find the end zone all season. That means that it will be up to the defense to make some game-changing plays to leave the “O” with good field position. Second-year defensive end Chris Long is a guy who just might be able to come up with one of those big plays. Long was very quiet as a rookie and through the first half of this season, but he has finally got things figured out. Long has recorded four sacks in the last five games and the Titans will need him to contain the elusive Vince Young this week. It is worth noting that the Rams are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. If you think odds makers are spotting St. Louis too many points this week, bet the Rams at +13 at Bodog.
