Dennis Erickson had the upper hand on Jim Harbaugh when Harbaugh was the QB of the Indianapolis Colts and he was the coach of the Seattle Seahawks, and now he will try to keep it when the two face off again this Saturday. Dennis Erickson dealt Harbaugh one of his worst defeats as a player back in 1997. Erickson’s Seattle team sacked Harbaugh eight times and buried the Colts 31-3. Harbaugh will be trying to build off Stanford’s first season opening win in a while and add to his resume of big road upsets. You all remember last season’s miraculous win 24-23 win at No. 2 USC. A win at Arizona State would be nearly as big as the Sun Devils are one of the favorites, behind USC, to win the Pac-10 Conference.
Arizona State has had Stanford’s number though, led by talented QB Rudy Carpenter, who has led the Devils to wins in the last two meetings by a combined score of 79-6. The offense got off to a strong start last Saturday with Carpenter completing 22 of 28 passes for 388 yards and a touchdown to open with a 30-3 win over the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. During the game, Carpenter tied a school mark with 13 straight completions. Carpenter threw for 3,202 yards and 25 touchdowns a season ago. The Sun Devils have been susceptible on the offensive line at times. They gave up way too many sacks last season and you can bet that Stanford is going to try to go after Carpenter to get him out of any kind of rhythm.
The Sun Devils could still benefit from a better running game. Carpenter ran for 40 yards himself last Saturday, but the rest of the team managed only 54 yards on 18 attempts. The Sun Devils averaged 137 rushing yards per game in the Pac-10 last season to rank seventh, but that was with tailback Keegan Herring who missed the opener with a hamstring injury. He ran for 815 yards a season ago. His status is unclear for this week’s contest. As I mentioned earlier, some of the deficiencies running the football stem from a week offensive front. If you think the Arizona State Sun Devils will run up the score again this week, bet them at -14 at Bookmaker Sportsbook.
The Sun Devils will have reason to be concerned with the Stanford running attack. Toby Gerhart only played one game last season due to a knee injury, but he was brilliant in his return last week. Gerhart rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Gerhart had 140 yards and 12 carries in his only start last season. If the kid can stay healthy, it appears that Stanford has themselves a gem.
Stanford was 4-8 in Harbaugh’s first season at the helm and is trying to reach the 2-0 mark for the first time since 2004. If you think the Cardinal can continue to surprise in the Pac-10 this season, bet them at +14 at BetUS Sportsbook.
