The Cleveland Browns pulled even with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the standings last season, but on the field, the AFC’s oldest rivalry has been a one-sided game. The visiting Steelers will be eyeing their 10th straight win over the Browns who will be eager to wash away the sour taste of an ugly week 1 loss to Dallas.
Pittsburgh and Cleveland has matched up 110 times in the regular season since the start of the 1950 season and each team has won 55 times. This rivalry still stands as one of the NFL most hostile. The Browns had the upper hand in the series during the 1950’s and 60’s winning 31 of 40 games. During that era, Cleveland also won four championships.
The Steelers took 15 of 20 games in the 1970’s when they won four Super Bowls. The teams split their next 32 games until the Browns franchise relocated to Baltimore after the 1995 season. Since Cleveland rejoined the NFL in 1999, Pittsburgh has had the momentum.
The Steelers have won 15 of the last 18 meetings since the Browns have returned, including nine straight by an average of 15.6 points per game, but the Browns feel strongly that they are ready to end the streak.
The Browns finished the 2007 season with their best record since their return to the league, going 10-6 and tying for the AFC North title with the Steelers. But since the Steelers swept the two regular season matchups, they were given the pass to the postseason.
The teams are the two favorites to battle it out for the division title again in 2008, but if week 1 serves as any indication, the Steelers are the early team to beat. Pittsburgh defeated Houston 38-17 while the Browns winless preseason play carried over to a deflating home loss to Dallas.
Pittsburgh won 34-7 at Cleveland last season in each team’s season opener. The Browns erupted for 51 points the following week in a win over Cincinnati. So perhaps, another week one blowout loss will have the Browns fired up here. You can bet the Browns at +6 at Bookmaker and receive up to a 20% cash signup bonus.
Pittsburgh running back Willie Parker played for the first time since breaking his leg last December and hadn’t missed a step. He rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Parker has been tough on the Browns defense, running for at least 100 yards in each of his last three games against them. He is a big reason why Cleveland decided to go after big nose guard Shaun Rogers in the offseason.
Ben Roethlisberger went 13 of 14 for 137 yards and two scores in just three quarters of work against Houston. The Ohio native is a perfect 7-0 against the Browns since coming into the league. Roethlisberger is nursing a sore shoulder and there is a possibility, although slight, that he won’t go this week.
The Browns played the Steelers to a 31-28 loss at Pittsburgh last November and they remain confident that they can pull off the upset. Bet the Steelers at -7 at BetUS and receive up to a 50% signup bonus.
