Odds on who Scores the First Touchdown in the Super Bowl

In a previous article we looked at the early action on the Super Bowl MVP betting which is normally one of the most popular props people bet on for the Super Bowl.  In this article we are going to take a look at another popular proposition wager in who will score the first touchdown of the game.  As soon as the odds go up on this, bettors start placing their action so lets take a look at how this year is shaking out.

With the Patriots favored so heavily, they are getting a lot of attention on this list. Four of the first five favorites are on the New England Roster, with Randy Moss the early favorite at 9-2 action.  The only Giant that made the top five  is Plaxico Burress with 8-1 odds.  Bettors are really counting on these two with Moss getting 21% of the wagering attention with Burress at 9%.

If you are betting on these two then history is on your side as the receiver spot has scored the first touchdown in 9 of the last 13 Super Bowls.

If you want to buck the trend and go with running backs then realize that only two times in the last 13 years has a runner crossed the goal line first.  It shouldn't come as a surprise that Laurence Maroney is the favorite here at 7-1 with 9% of the wagering heading his way.  Brandon Jacobs is getting longer odds at 10-1, but is getting only 4% of the betting volume.  Ahmad Bradshaw at 15-1 is getting more attention that Jacobs with 6% of the bettors backing the backup.

Quarterbacks don't really factor into this prop and Tom Brady at 20-1 is seeing only 1% of the early action.  Eli Manning also has 1% of the volume at a 25-1 shot.  Only one times in the past 20 years has a quarterback scored the first touchdown and that was Ben Roethlisberger just a few years ago.

If you are also thinking about betting on the MVP then note this, no time over the last 20 years has a player both scored first and went on to win the MVP.  This might be a good reason to look for different players in each category.

If you think special teams might get the early score, then take a look at Wes Welker at 7-1 odds.  He gives you the double threat of returning and catching balls, so even though only two times has the first touchdown been on a return in the past 20 years, this guy covers more ground for your wager.

So there isn't a name on there you like, or you think the defense will score first?  Then try the field wager at 7-1 odds.  This is more popular than you might think as the field has received 3% of the action so far.

Don't waste your money on the no touchdown option even with those hefty 200-1 payouts.  This has never happened and isn't going to this year with the highest scoring team in history taking the field.

History has shown no direct link between the team scoring first and the team that wins the game, so feel free to balance your action out on the Giants if you think the Patriots are going to win outright.

If you are looking for a heavy dog that gives you some value, then try Kevin Faulk of the Patriots.  He is getting 6% of the action at 20-1 odds and he made a couple of big plays in the AFC Championship game.  If the Giants try to take away the bigger names, this guy could sneak in for a score early.
