2009 Super Bowl Odds: New York Giants Now Favored
With the first round of the NFL playoffs over, the odds for which team will win the Super Bowl this year have been updated. The usual suspects are still at the top of the list. The New York Giants are the favorites (+250) to win the NFC and continue on to win the Super Bowl, and with four teams being eliminated from post-season play, several other teams have seen their odds improve. If you feel like you have a firm grasp on NFL betting, particularly NFL futures betting, then maybe taking the Giants +250 to win the Super Bowl is a good bet for you.
With the Giants picked to dominate the NFC, the AFC picture doesn’t seem to be as clear for guys that set the NFL odds. The Steelers are the favorite to represent their half of the NFL (+400), but the Titans (+600) and now the Ravens (+700) are not that far back. The Ravens, of course, dominated the Dolphins in Miami last week, again showcasing their dangerous defense, but also establishing an emerging offensive threat with rookie QB Joe Flacco at the helm. The Titans and Ravens will meet in Tennessee this week with Baltimore as 3 point underdogs.
The AFC has also seen a surge from the San Diego Chargers (+800 to win the Super Bowl), who snuck into the playoffs and were able to escape a letdown against the Colts last week in San Diego. The next big test for the Chargers comes at Pittsburgh. I don’t think I’m the only one that’s waiting for the other shoe to drop for San Diego, I just don’t see how they can sustain their momentum against this Pittsburgh defense. The Steelers are 6 point favorites this week over the Chargers. If you want the best chance to win your bets this week, try the NFL picks from our expert handicappers.
The Eagles (+600) are fairly close behind the Giants in the NFC. Philadelphia is a bit of a surprise, though I would say that the number is justified. Despite only narrowly making the playoffs, the Eagles looked great in a 26-14 defeat of the Vikings on their home turf in the Wild Card Round. For a team that ranked 4th in the NFL regular season in total defense and 6th in total offense, the real surprise is that the Eagles did not make the playoffs on a slightly easier path. This Sunday the Eagles play the Giants in New York in the divisional round of the playoffs, with the Giants as 4 point favorites. Philly and New York split the regular season series, with each team winning on the road. The Eagles won the most recent meeting, in Week 14, at New York, 20-14.
The other game in the NFC is on Saturday and it will feature the long-shot Arizona Cardinals at Carolina against the Panthers. The Panthers have the second-best odds in the NFC, and third-best out of the remaining teams in the playoffs (+500) to win the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Arizona is still a huge underdog to win the big game (+3000), and faces tough odds this weekend against the Panthers, who are 9.5 point favorites.
I’m sticking with a New York/Tennessee championship game, where I have the Titans beating the Giants in my Super Bowl Predictions article from last week.
