2009 Super Bowl Odds

Written by Steve Janus

super-bowl-odds-123108Every season before the NFL playoffs kick off sportsbooks around the web put out their odds for each playoff team to win the Super Bowl this year.  Today I’ll be looking at the odds over at Sportsbook.com, which happened to be the first book to post these odds this year.  Not only can these lines be interesting, you can use them as one of your many tools in trying to win money.  The sportsbooks have proven time and again that they know what they are doing.  They aren’t going to give you great odds on a team that is likely to win the Super Bowl, right?  We can use these numbers as a general gauge as to who has the best or worst chance at actually making it to, and winning, the 2009 Super Bowl.

The odds-on favorite this season season is the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants at +250 to win the big game again.  The Giants stormed through the regular season, earning the top seed in the NFC.  Seeing as how the Giants won over the Patriots in last season’s championship, my bet is that the oddsmakers feel like, if New York makes it to the finale, they’ll come out on top based somewhat on last year’s performance.

Over in the AFC the Steelers get top billing at +450 odds to win it all.  With their top-rated defense it’s easy to see how Pitt is considered to have one of the best chances at bringing home the Lombardi Trophy.

With the next-best odds to win the Super Bowl at +500 we have the Carolina Panthers.  The Panthers have had an incredible year running the ball this season, which always ends up being important in the playoffs.  They’ll have to go through New York to get their, of course, but the Panthers held their own against the defending champs when they played them during the regular season.

The team with the best record in the NFL’s regular season, the Tennessee Titans, come in as just the 4th favorite to win the Super Bowl this year.  The Titans earned the top seed in the AFC and they’ve consistently done more right than any other team in the NFL, yet they are still just +600 odds to win it all.

After the top four there’s kind of a drop-off into what I’d call middle-of-the-pack teams.  They aren’t bad, they just aren’t being seriously considered as contenders.  This would include:

  • Indianapolis +1000 – The Colts finished the regular season with 9 straight wins.  They’ll have to win on the road in the playoffs, however, which never helps your chances of making it to the big game.
  • Philadelphia +1000 – The Eagles didn’t even look like they were going to make the playoffs, now they are considered to be a sleeper to sneak into the Super Bowl.
  • San Diego +1000 – Much like the Eagles, the Chargers needed a miracle to get into the playoffs and got it.  I guess oddsmakers feel like they’ll try to make the most of their opportunity.
  • Baltimore +1200 – The Ravens played well down the stretch and their defense is difficult for any offense to handle.

That brings us to the long-shots.  These are the teams that barely the playoffs or have a very difficult path to make it into the Super Bowl.

  • Atlanta +2000 – The Falcons are a great story for the regular season, but oddsmakers aren’t giving them much of a chance to cap off their Cinderella Story with a Super Bowl win.
  • Minnesota +2500 – It came down to the last second of the regular season for the Vikings to make the playoffs.  They jumped that hurdle, but they aren’t expected to go very far in the playoffs this year.
  • Miami +2500 – The Dolphins should be absolutely thrilled to even be on this list.  Coming off of a 1-11, it’s impressive enough that they made the playoffs.
  • Arizona +5000 – The Cardinals are the biggest long shot of all of the NFL teams in the playoffs this year because, well, they are the worst team in the playoffs.  The Cards looked awful through the final month of the season and are expected to exit the playoffs rather quickly this year.

There you have it.  Which team do you think is going to take the Super Bowl this year?  Think you know?  Then why not prove it by heading over to Sportsbook.com and putting your money where your mouth is!  You’ll get to show you know what you are talking about AND make some cash, it’s a win-win.  If you know what you are talking about, that is.
