Super Bowl Odds: Edgerrin James Props
Edge wasn’t running the football with much of an edge about him halfway through the regular season and it caused the Cardinals coaching staff to all but phase him out. This came as a major surprise considering the strong season he had in 2007-08. While it seemed like it at the time, the Cards did not quit on James and he has battled back to be a huge contributor in these playoffs. Not only is James the leading rusher for the Cards in the postseason, he is the leading rusher in the entire playoffs with 203 yards. With the emergence of Hightower and with James getting up there in running back years, this could be his last hoorah for the Cards. Let’s hope Edge goes out on a strong note. Total Rushing Yards: Over 42.5 (-115)/Under 42.5 (-115)
Odds makers are trying to be very tricky with this line. They want bettors to look at what James has done through the first three playoff games and jump on the over here, but we won’t bite. The Steelers boast the No. 2 ranked rushing defense in the NFL this season, allowing only 76 yards per game. They have given up just 88 yards in two playoff games. Total Rushing Attempts: Over 12.5 (-115)/Under 12.5 (-115)
I like the over here. We don’t expect James to do a lot of damage, but we do expect the Cards to run him to keep Pittsburgh honest and to set up play action opportunities. James will get in the neighborhood of 14 to 15 totes in this one. Bet Edgerrin James over 12.5 carries in Super Bowl XLIII.
Longest Rush From Scrimmage: Over 9.5 (-115)/Under 9.5 (-115)
James hasn’t been much of a threat to break any long ones and even if he gets through the initial layer untouched, the Steelers are so good at filling in the secondary, especially Troy Polamalu, that he won’t get too far in this one. Will He Score a TD: Yes (+280)/No (-360)
I’m going to have to lay the juice and take “No” here. James has only made it into the end zone four times all season. James is always substituted for Tim Hightower when the Cards get in scoring position so it will be very unlikely that Edge scores in this game. Total Receiving Yards: Over 7.5 (-115)/Under 7.5 (-115)
This is where James has a chance to be effective in this game. Warner has been fantastic at hitting hot routes and dumping it off to his backs when facing pressure and he’ll continue to do those things in this game. James has had one grab in each of the Cards three postseason contests and each have gone for more than 7 yards. Bet Edgerrin James over 7.5 total receiving yards in Super Bowl XLIII.
Total Rushing Yards on First Attempt: Over 2.5 (-120)/Under 2.5 (-120)
I can’t see Arizona getting much done on the ground in this one and I like Pitt to stuff him on his first attempt. While Arizona would like to run to set up the pass, they will likely have to do things the other way around in this one. Edge will get a carry early and I don’t think it will go anywhere.
