Super Bowl Picks: Cross Sports Props

Written by Steve Janus

super-bowl-cross-sport-props-013009It’s amazing how many different ways you can bet on the Super Bowl.  One particular kind of Super Bowl props betting has caught some steam over the past couple of years and has captured my attention:  Cross Sport Props.

So, what exactly is a cross sport prop?  As the name suggests, this is a bet across sports.  So you’re taking some element of the Super Bowl, and comparing it to some other sport in some way, shape, or form.  Since it is basketball season, most of the cross sports props have to do with basketball games or players, but there are some golf, hockey, and even soccer cross sports options.  Here are some examples of my favorite cross sport props for this year’s Super Bowl betting:

Steelers Points vs. LeBron James Points -1.5 (-115)
In this bet you would be predicting who would score more points on Super Bowl Sunday, the Steelers against the Cardinals in the actual Super Bowl, or LeBron James against the Detroit Pistons.  My money (if I were betting on this particular prop) would be on James, who is averaging about 5 points more per game than the Steelers have on the season.

Hines Ward Receiving Yards vs. Sergio Garcia (total strokes in the 4th round of the Dubai Classic) -9.5
Here we have one of the first golf cross sport props that I can remember seeing.  We’d be taking how many yards that Hines Ward ends up with in the Super Bowl, against Sergio Garcia’s number of strokes in the 4th round of the Dubai Classic.  The odd part about this one to me is that Garcia is “favored” by 9.5 points.  I would have liked to be in the meeting that determined that line!  My pick for this one is on Garcia -9.5.  With Ward still recovering from injury, I think he’ll be used as more of a decoy than anything.

Larry Fitzgerald Touchdowns vs Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals) Goals – Pick ‘Em
In a football to hockey cross sport prop we’ve got Arizona Cardinals’ wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald pitted against Washington Capitals Left Wing Alex Ovechkin.  Currently, Ovechkin is averaging about 0.66 goals per game, while Fitzgerald averaged 0.75 touchdowns per game in the regular season.  If that weren’t enough to make me lean toward Larry Fitz for this bet, his 5 touchdowns in 3 playoff games is.

Cardinals Touchdowns vs Liverpool/Chelsea Total Goals +0.5 (-155)
I admittedly don’t know a lot about soccer, but I do think that the Cardinals will find the end zone at least once against the Steelers.  Will that be enough?  I don’t really know.  Soccer games are usually like 0-0 ties or 1-0 victories, right?
