Super Bowl XLIII Picks & Predictions

Written by Steve Janus

super-bowl-predictions-123008It’s almost that time of year again.  The NFL playoffs kick off this weekend, so naturally I’ve been flooded with e-mails about who is going to end up in this year’s Super Bowl.  Before I jump into that, I’d like to take a look back at some of the Super Bowl Odds that were released for this year almost immediately after last year’s big game.  Many of the predictions were spot-on, however, like most seasons in the NFL, there were plenty of surprises!

Way back in February, just one day after the Giants/Patriots Super Bowl ended, BetUS.com released their odds on the 2009 Super Bowl (the Super Bowl for the 2008 regular season, of course).  At that time the New England Patriots were slated as the favorite to head back to the championship and win at 7/2 odds.  This was long before the season-ending injury to Tom Brad and even longer before the Patriots were eliminated from participating in the playoffs this year.  New England actually had a pretty solid year, all things considered, but they definitely won’t be playing in the big game this season.

Out of the teams currently in the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins were given the worst odds of the bunch to win the Super Bowl this year at 150 to 1 odds, which I should mention was also tied for the worst odds out of any team in the field.  I’m not saying that the Dolphins are going to win the Super Bowl, in fact, I doubt that they even come close, but to come off of a 1-15 season and the longest odds in the NFL to win the big bowl, you have to marvel at the job this organization has done in 2008.

Your best investment after the 2008 Super Bowl would have been to put some money on the Tennessee Titans to win the Super Bowl this season.  At 40 to 1 before the season started, I consider the Titans the best team in the field as far as value goes.  There were several teams with equal or better odds to the Titans that didn’t make the playoffs:  Cincinnati 28/1, Jacksonville 20/1, Denver 40/1, Green Bay 20/1, New Orleans 25/1, Washington 40/1, and, of course, the Patriots at 7/2.  Tennessee ended the season with the best record in all of football.  I think it’s safe to say that nobody saw that coming.

So, who is going to actually win the Super Bowl this year?  Sportsbook.com has released their 2009 Super Bowl odds for teams currently in the playoffs.  Out of the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently considered the favorite at +450 odds, while the New York Giants are expected to represent the NFC, and win the Super Bowl, at +250 odds.

While I am going to choose the Giants out of the NFC, I disagree with them on the Steelers out of the AFC.  As of today, I’ll take the Titans to represent the AFC in this year’s Super Bowl.  I like what Carolina has done this year, but it’s been clear for the majority of the season that the Giants are the best team in the NFC.  With Brandon Jacobs in the lineup for New York, I don’t think many teams could get past them.  He brings that extra “it” element to the game.  The Giants always seem to play better with him on the field.  The Titans are given +600 odds to win the Super Bowl, just behind the Steelers and Panthers, but I don’t really see why.  What has Tennessee done besides consistently show that they are the best team in the NFL this year?  They beat the Steelers, they beat Ravens, they beat Indy when it mattered, they beat the Vikings, and they beat just about every other team they played this year, mostly in convincing fashion.

I’ve got the New York Giants against the Tennessee Titans in the Super Bowl, but who will win the game?  If this were the match up, I would have to lean toward the Titans to win it all.  I love their defensive front and their running game, two of the most important factors on the football field.  I know the Giants have been there before and would no doubt be favored in this match up, but I do not like how New York’s offensive line looked against the Cowboys, and I question whether Eli Manning can be consistent in the post season without a guy like Plaxico Burress.  Only time will tell, but there you have it.  My predicted winner of the 2009 Super Bowl is the Tennessee Titans.

Predicted Super Bowl Score: Tennessee Titans 27, New York Giants 21

I WILL AGREE WITH YOU ON THE 2 SUPER BOWL TEAMS YOU CHOSE TO MAKE IT THERE: NEW YORK GIANTS VS. TENNESSEE TITANS

HOWEVER, I PICK THE GIANTS TO WIN. BRANDON JACOBS IS A RUNNING BACK THAT MOST DEFENDERS DON’T WANT TO TOUCH. HE TRULY CHANGES DEFENSES – LIKE THE WAY LAWRENCE TAYLOR CHANGED OFFENSES.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT ELI IS GREAT UNDER PRESSURE AND I THINK ABOVE ALL THEY WILL WIN THIS SUPER BOWL BECAUSE THEY NEED TO WIN IT FOR THEIR COORDINATORS; KEVIN GILBRIDE & STEVE SPAGNUOLO

THEY NEED TO WIN IT FOR THEM BECAUSE AFTER THIS SEASON THOSE GUYS ARE GONE!

I can’t say that I disagree with you on Jacobs. He is a special back, not to mention fun to watch.

I still think the Titans end up winning, partly because they have a huge chip on their shoulder. They put together this great regular season, yet nobody is really giving them a chance.

For now I’ll just hope that both of them make it to the big game! :)

    Good luck!
