Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts NFL Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 2, 2009

The 5-6 Tennessee’s Titans look to extend their winning streak to six games this Sunday. In order to do that, they’ll have to end the undefeated season of the 11-0 Indianapolis Colts. Last week, Vince Young continued his pursuit toward earning comeback player of the year by engineering a 99-yard game-winning touchdown drive to defeat the Cardinals 20-17. Meanwhile, Indy overcame a 17-0 deficit to defeat the Texans 35-27. The Colts own a 16-13 lead in the all-time series but these two teams have split the last six meetings. NFL lines makers expect Indy to remain unbeaten, listing the Colts as 7-point favorites with the total set at 47.

Vince Young has led the Titans back to the fringe of the AFC playoff race after the team got off to a 0-6 start. While his numbers don’t often wow you, it’s safe to say the kid is a winner. He has now won his last nine starts for the Titans, but he faces his toughest task yet this season in Week 13 as he must lead his team past the undefeated Colts on the road. He figures to have his work cut out for himself against a defense holding opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of just 76.5, which is good for seventh-best in the NFL. The difference between Vince Young and Kerry Collins has been Young’s ability to make plays with his legs. If he can continue to do so Sunday, I have every reason to believe the Titans will be in the football game.

The other guy that can make plays with his legs, maybe better than anyone else in the league, is running back Chris Johnson. Johnson has rushed for at least 125 yards in six straight games and is averaging an unheard of 154.7 yards per game. While no one else has been able to hold down Johnson lately, the Colts were actually able to hold him to only 34 yards rushing in a 31-9 win earlier this season. Johnson is going to have to go over the century mark this time around to give his team a chance. It is worth noting that the Titans are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog of 3.5-10.0 points. If you like Tennessee to keep this one close, bet the Titans at +7 at Bodog.

With a win Sunday, the Colts would tie New England’s record for consecutive regular season wins with 21 in a row. QB Peyton Manning is also on the verge of history as he only needs one touchdown pass to become the first quarterback in NFL history to throw 25 or more touchdown passes in 12 straight seasons. Manning has been brilliant in engineering multiple comebacks in Indy’s last five games and hopefully the magic hasn’t run out with a red hot Titans team up next.

The old saying goes “I’d rather be lucky than good” and the Colts have certainly had the luck of the horse shoe on their side in recent weeks. The Colts have set an NFL-record this season with five straight wins after trailing in the fourth quarter. While Indy is 11-0, there appears to be some cause for concern. The Colts appear destined for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, but do they have what it takes to make a run at another Super Bowl? Over their last five games, they have relied heavily on Peyton’s Manning arm and fortunately he is yet to let them down. But for Indy to be considered a top Super Bowl contender in my book, it must be more consistent on the defensive side of the football and a little bit more balanced on offense. It is worth noting that the Colts are on a 5-0 ATS run versus teams with a losing record. If you like Indy to keep rolling Sunday and to improve to 8-4 ATS on the season, bet the Colts at -7 at Bodog.
