Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Lines & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

tn jack 93009If the Tennessee Titans hope to finally get in the win column this week, they’ll have to get the job done on the road against division rival Jacksonville at Municipal Stadium this Sunday. NFL lines makers predict that Tennessee will finally break through, but it’s not going to be easy, listing the Titans as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 41.5.

Last week, Tennessee fell 24-17 to the New York Jets while the Jaguars got in the win column for the first time this season with a 31-24 win at Houston. These teams last met in mid-November of last year with the Titans winning 24-14 behind three touchdown strikes by QB Kerry Collins. This series has been all Tennessee of late with the Titans winning four of the last five meetings to take a 16-12 lead in the all-time series.

In my opinion, this game is going to come down to which team wants it more. One would think the Titans could not be hungrier. They raced out to a 10-0 record last season and emerged as the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, but they find themselves at 0-3 to start their 2009 campaign, being on the wrong end of three close games. The Titans know that if they want to make it three straight trips to the playoffs that their losing streak must end now.

Jacksonville should be hungry too after getting beat up on all of last season to finish with just five wins. This is a proud football team which won 12 games in both the 2005 and 2007 seasons. A win this week gets them to 2-2 and on the right track toward a third playoff appearance in five years.

For Tennessee to come out on top this week, it really needs to catch some amnesia. The Titans must forget that they are 0-3, even though everyone is constantly reminding them. And Collins has to forget that he ended last week’s game against the Jets with 13 consecutive incomplete passes. He’ll have an excellent opportunity to get back on track against a Jaguars defense which ranks last in the NFL against the pass. It is worth noting that the Titans are 12-4 against the spread in their last 16 versus the AFC South and the Jaguars are just 1-8 against the number in their last nine home games. If you like Tennessee to get its first win of the season this week, bet the Titans at -3 at Sportsbook.com.

Jacksonville enters with some nice momentum after a big division win over Houston. If it hopes to keep right on rolling, the recipe is simple: run the football effectively. Since 2006, the Jags are 17-4 when gaining 150 or more yards on the ground. That means they’ve got to pound Maurice Jones-Drew, who is averaging 4.9 yards per carry this season, all day long. When Tennessee gets everyone in the box to stop the run, that’s when QB David Garrard can look to make big plays down the field to Torry Holt and Mike Sims-Walker, who has been a pleasant surprise with 12 grabs for 187 yards the last two weeks. It is also worth noting that the Jaguars are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games as a home underdog of 3.0 points or less and the Titans are 0-4 against the number in their last four games as a favorite. If you think Jacksonville has what it takes to defend its home turf, bet the Jaguars at +3 at Sportsbook.com.
