Texas A&M vs Oklahoma Football Picks & Odds
The Oklahoma Sooners look to keep their outside chance for a national title bid alive as they visit the Texas A&M Aggies this Saturday. The Sooners were off to one of the best starts in all of college football before being upended by Texas in the Red River Shootout. Since then, however, the Sooners are back to their old tricks, dominating opponents and winning football games. Texas A&M is just 4-5 on the year and they’ve struggled against a very good Big 12 South division, earning just 2 wins in 5 conference games. From the looks of the schedule, the Aggies are going to miss out on becoming bowl-eligible, but anything can happen and A&M has improved as the season has rolled on. A win over Oklahoma, even at home, doesn’t seem likely, the Sooners are 28 point favorites over the Aggies with the game total set at 72 points.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more explosive offense than Oklahoma this year. The Sooners are embarrassing opponents, scoring nearly 50 points per game and racking up a mind-blowing 538 yards of total offense per game. Much of the offensive production comes from signal-caller Sam Bradford, one of the most prolific passers in the college game this year. Bradford has over 3,000 yards already, is completing nearly 70% of all his passes, and has 34 touchdowns to just six interceptions. The Sooners have great double threat in the passing game with Juaquin Iglesias and Jermaine Gresham, who have combined for 67 catches, over 1,000 yards, and 20 TDs. The running game is lead by DeMarco Murray and complimented by Chris Brown, and both are capable of making huge plays at any time. Texas A&M will certainly have plenty of talented players to keep track of this weekend.
The Sooners’ defensive numbers aren’t very impressive, but when you consider how much this team scores, it’s not surprising that teams are able to put up point and yards. So far this year Oklahoma is yielding 353 yards per game and 23 points per game, more than enough for their offense to cover. The Sooners have a lot of room to improve on the defensive side of the ball, to be sure, but, with the exception of the Texas game, they always keep them well within range. The Sooners are 27.5 point favorites at BetUs.com this week.
The Texas A&M offense is modest in a Big 12 conference that is littered with high scoring teams. At this point in the season, the Aggies are only averaging 26.9 points per game on 362 yards of total offense. Not horrible numbers by any means, but they pale in comparison to the numbers that teams like Oklahoma and Texas are putting up. A&M relies mostly on the strong arm of quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who has put together a respectable season, throwing for 1,967 yards and 18 touchdowns against just 4 interceptions.
The biggest reason for the Aggies losing record probably comes on the defensive end of their team. Opposing teams are averaging nearly 33 points per game on them and they are giving up over 400 yards of total offense. It isn’t as if the Aggies are giving up big chunks of yardage just through the air or just on the ground, on average they are giving up over 200 yards passing and rushing per game this season. Against this Oklahoma offense it’s no surprise the Aggies are 28 point underdogs this weekend.
This weekend won’t help the Aggies bowl bid, as they must defeat Baylor and either Oklahoma this week or Texas in their final game to become bowl eligible. Oklahoma is still technically alive in the national title conversation and you have to believe that Bob Stoops will put his team in the best position possible to make a national title run possible. That means that teams like Texas A&M are going to get a heavy thrashing. Don’t expect the Sooners to call the dogs off in this one until the game is way out of reach.
