Texas at Oklahoma: College Basketball Picks & Predictions

Written by Steve Janus

texas-oklahoma-betting-oddsTwo big-time schools from the Big 12 Conference clash tonight on the hardwood as the Oklahoma Sooners host the Texas Longhorns. At 15-1 the Sooners are off to their best start in over 20 years, but they will be trying to overcome a 6-game losing streak against the Longhorns. It’s not like these games have been nail-biters either. In Oklahoma’s six consecutive losses, Texas has won by an average of nearly 17 points. Oklahoma is hoping that their squad, including sophomore stud Blake Griffin, has improved enough to get past their bitter rival this year. The Game starts tonight a 9pm EST. Oklahoma is a 4.5 point favorite over Texas.

Griffin is the unquestioned leader of Oklahoma’s offense. He’s currently averaging 22.5 of the team’s 80.4 points per game. Freshman shooting guard Willie Warren has complimented Griffin’s tremendous play with some impressive shooting of his own. Warren shoots 50.6% from the field and 39.0% from three point range and ranks second on the team with 15.8 points per game. Aided by Warren’s shooting ability, as well as Griffin’s 64.7% shooting from the floor, Oklahoma averages 47.4% as a team, more than 3% better than their opponent tonight. Griffin is also the man for the Sooners on defense, averaging 14.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, leading Oklahoma in all of those categories. The problems for the Sooners come when Griffin is off the court because there is such a drastic drop off in production. Blake’s brother Taylor Griffin is serviceable as a rebounder, but isn’t nearly the scoring threat of his younger brother.

Texas will try to counter the Sooner’s combo of Griffin and Warren with their own dynamic duo in guard A.J. Abrams and guard/forward Damion James. The two account for 32.4 of the team’s 72.9 points per game and while neither is a viable option to defend Blake Griffin, they will both be intigral in keeping up with the Sooners. The Longhorn boast a defense that allows just 60.9 points per game, but don’t be surprised if this game is won on the offensive end of the floor. The Sooners simply have too many options for Texas to slow them down completely.

With revenge on their minds tonight, I think the Sooners walk away from this one with a win, and a cover. Texas has own the series recently, but this is one of the best Oklahoma teams in recent memory. I see Griffin coming away with a monster game as the Longhorns do not have a defender to slow him down. The play in the back court is evenly matched, but the Sooners will own the paint in Norman tonight.

Take the Oklahoma Sooners -4.5

Predicted Score: Oklahoma Sooners 76, Texas Longhorns 66
