The Texas Tech Red Raiders have become very accustomed to racking up passing yards and points in recent years, but now an improved defense gives the 12th ranked Red Raiders hopes of landing a spot in the Big 12 title game.  But the big question still looming is how improved is it?

We’ll find out what that defense is really made of Saturday when Tech visits the high powered Nevada Wolf Pack in the first meeting ever between the two schools.

The Red Raiders have gained the reputation of a team which can score at will but can’t stop anyone. Last season they averaged more than 40 points per game with QB Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree leading the prolific offense. The two easily led the nation is passing yards and receiving yards respectively. The defense, though, allowed more than 40 points three times in Big 12 losses, and permitted 551 yards in a 59-43 loss to rival Texas.

The Red Raiders earned their highest preseason ranking since 1977 this year, but a 49-24 opening win over Eastern Washington was not enough to convince poll voters that they should move up as these pollsters still seem to question the defense.

Harrell was awesome, connecting on 43-of-58 passes for 536 yards and two touchdowns as the Red Raiders totaled 639 yards of offense on the day. The defense, though, gave up 341 passing yards to an FCS opponents and that is what has the pollsters raising an eye brow.

The Red Raiders returned eight defensive starters and hopes were high for this unit, especially after limiting Virginia to just seven second-half points in a comeback win in last year’s Gator Bowl. If you think the Red Raider defense can step up this week to get the job done, you can bet Texas Tech at -10.5 at Bookmaker Sportsbook.

Texas Tech’s defense will definitely have its work cut out for itself. Working in coach Chris Ault’s Pistol offense, the Pack totled 629 yards in last week’s 49-13 win over Grambling State. While Texas Tech does its damage through the air, the Pack takes to the ground. Nevada rushed for 426 yards with Vai Taua racking up 103 of those yards and adding two scores. QB Colin Kaepernick rushed for three more touchdowns.

Luke Lippincott is the running back to really watch though. Lippincott ran for 1,420 yards and 15 touchdowns a season ago. He rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown in Nevada’s week 1 win.

The Wolf Pack’s offense was very good at home in 2007, averaging 39 points and 214 yards rushing per game.  We just saw the upset that Vandy was able to pull off against South Carolina and if the Red Raiders aren’t ready to play, they could share the same fate as the Gamecocks.  If you think Nevada’s offense is good enough to stick with the Red Raiders, you can bet them at +10.5 at BetUS Sportsbook.
