Texas Tech at Oklahoma Football Odds

Written by Steve Janus on November 20, 2008

The biggest match up of the week has turned into one of the biggest games of the year as the undefeated Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to Oklahoma to clash with the Sooners.  Tech is coming off of a much-needed bye week after their epic game against Texas, followed immediately by a game against a very tough Oklahoma State team.  The Raiders came out of both games unscathed, but if they are looking for a BCS Championship bid it’s all about Saturday against the Sooners.  Since losing to Texas, Oklahoma has been tearing up opponents left and right.  They haven’t played the best competition, but they’ve posted impressive numbers in their last four games.  The winner of Saturday’s game increases their chances at the national title game dramatically.  Playing at home, Oklahoma is a 7 point favorite over Texas Tech with the total of the game set at 76.5 points.

Looking at the kinds of numbers Texas Tech puts up on offense it’s easy to see why they could be undefeated.  The Red Raiders are posting nearly 48 points per game on an equally ridiculous 566 yards of total offense per game.  Tech’s quarterback, Heisman hopeful Graham Harrell is the major source of the offensive production.  He’s lead the Raiders to the best passing offense in the country by throwing for 433 yards per contest.  You also can’t overlook the contribution of the nation’s best wide receiver, Michael Crabtree, who has posted over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, accounting for half of all of the TDs thrown by Harrell.  As impossible as it seems, the Tech running game has been great this year as well averaging 132.6 yards per game.  The Sooner defense will have plenty of players to track, but obviously their biggest concern is with Harrell.

Texas Tech’s defense may not be considered great by national standards, but in the offense-heavy Big 12 their numbers are very impressive.  They are limiting opponents to 22 points per game on 351 total yards.  The defense has been one of the more aggressive units in the conference, forcing 24 turnovers and recording 26 sacks in just 10 games this year.  With all of the offensive firepower this team possesses, it’s easy to overlook a defensive unit that deserves just as much credit for Texas Tech’s incredible season.  The Red Raiders come into Norman as a 7 point underdog.

As great as Tech’s number on offense are, if there’s a team that can match them, it’s the Oklahoma Sooners.  The Sooners lead the nation in scoring by averaging 51.4 points per game and rank just below Texas Tech in total offense with 533 yards per game.  Oklahoma’s offense is also lead by a Heisman hopeful quarterback in Sam Bradford.  Bradford ranks just below Graham Harrell in several categories, but has thrown for 2 more touchdowns at this point in the season.  Oklahoma has been more successful than the Red Raiders at putting together a ground game this season.  The Sooners currently average 194 rushing yards per game.  Tech’s defense has their most difficult task of the year taking on the Sooners in Oklahoma.

The Sooners have taken some criticism for their defensive play, but, looking at the numbers, they have had similar results to a Texas Tech defense that is highly praised in the media.  Oklahoma allows 23.6 points per game on 345.6 yards of total offense and they’ve been even more aggressive than Tech, grabbing 34 sacks and 24 turnovers this season.  There will be plenty of point put up in this game on both sides of the ball, but the point here is that the Sooner’s defense is comparable to the Red Radiers’.  If you think the Sooners can cover the spread this week, take Oklahoma -7 at BetUS.com.

Texas Tech has had an incredible season, there’s no doubt about that, but playing in Norman against the Sooners is one of the most difficult tasks in college football.  Both teams have a tremendous motivation for the game and both have put up impressive numbers all season long.  This is exactly the kind of game everyone wants in college football at this point in the season.
