Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Picks & Predictions

The undefeated Tennessee Titans head to Kansas City this week to take on the Chiefs and they are hoping they stay that way. Denver came to town in week 4 and saw its undefeated season come to an end. Odds makers feel the Titans will take care of business and have installed them as a 9-point favorite with the total set at 35.
The Titans come off a bye week looking to extend the best start in franchise history this week. Prior to the bye week, Tennessee improved its league-high winning streak to eight games, one that, ironically enough, began with a win at Kansas City a season ago.
The Titans are the NFL’s only remaining unbeaten team and head coach Jeff Fisher has little doubt that his team will be able to pick up right where they left off.
Tennessee’s success can largely be attributed to a strong defense which has held opponents to just 288.6 yards per game and a league-low 11.2 points per game. The Titans are also leading the NFL with 14 takeaways.
While Tennessee is off to a great start, the team knows there is still room for improvement. One area they have to get better is penalties. They were stung with 10 penalties for 78 yards in their last game against Baltimore.
The Titans could also stand to become a little more explosive offensively. You know the sportsbooks are not expected many points to be scored in Titans games when they are setting the NFL odds on the total at 35.
The offense is averaging just 289.0 yards per game and was limited to a season low 210 against the Ravens. QB Kerry Collins was 17 of 32 for 163 yards and a touchdown in that game but he was also intercepted twice.
A date with the Chiefs should be able to help the offense gain some rhythm. The Chiefs are allowing 396.6 yards per game this season, which is fourth-worst in the NFL.
While it likely doesn’t help the Chiefs for the future, Kansas City caught a break when it was announced that nine-time Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez would not be traded to a contender.
Gonzalez still gives the Chiefs their best receiving target and is a great red zone option. He is the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns for tight ends. Gonzalez has 21 grabs for 193 yards and two scores this season.
While they get to keep Tony Gonzalez, the Chiefs will not have star running back Larry Johnson at their disposal this week. The team suspended Johnson one game for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Johnson is facing a simple assault charge for pushing a woman at a nightclub. It was the third time he’s been charged with assaulting a woman, but the Chiefs said the suspension had nothing to do with that incident.
The two-time Pro Bowler will be missed as he leads the team with 417 rushing yards.
Kansas City’s offense only managed 127 yards, the team’s lowest total since 1986, when it was shut out 34-0 against the Carolina Panthers in its last game. QB’s Damon Huard and Tyler Thigpen were sacked three times and intercepted twice.
The Chiefs hope that their passing game can get a boost with the return of Brodie Croyle this week. He suffered a separated shoulder in the season opener. Croyle was 25 of 43 for 217 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Titans last season, but it is going to be tough on him facing one of the NFL’s best defenses having not seen game action in several weeks.
If Kansas City was shut down by Carolina, I really expect them to be shut down by a fresh and prepared Titans team this week. I also expect a much better offensive effort out of Tennessee against a poor Chiefs’ defense. We’ll bet the Titans at -9 at Bookmaker and receive a 20% cash bonus.
