Toledo at Akron Football Odds & Picks

On Wednesday, November 5th at 8 PM EST the Toledo Rockets will head to Akron, Ohio to take on the Zips. Akron is yet to win a home game this year in three tries while Toledo is 2-2 on the road. The Rockets though are just 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference while the Zips come in at 2-2. Odds makers are currently favoring Akron by 6.5 points in this one with the total at 54.
Akron has been off since October 18th when they beat Eastern Michigan 42-35 and hopefully that extra time off will help them turn around the series with Toledo, who has beaten the Zips the last six times the teams have played.
Offense hasn’t been a problem this year for the Rockets, who are gaining 321.1 total yards per game, but aren’t converting those gains into points as the team is putting up just 21.2 ppg. The ground game is led by DaJuane Collins and Morgan Williams. Collins has five touchdowns and 557 yards while Williams has chipped in 408 yards and three scores of his own. Quarterback Aaron Opelt has done a good job of moving the ball through the air when asked to. He is completing 62% of his passes for 1,480 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The defense has been the problem for Toledo lately, giving up 31.4 ppg. Teams are running all over the Rockets to the tune of 174.1 ypg and 18 rushing touchdowns. You won’t find Toledo forcing many turnovers either as they have just ten takeaways and eight sacks. If you want to bet on the Rockets, Sportsbook.com is listing Toledo at +6.5.
Akron is putting up 28.1 ppg with a balanced attack of both running and passing. The ground game has been good for 158.4 ypg with Dennis Kennedy gaining 750 yards and nine scores. Quarterback Chris Jacquemain has been a little inconsistent, but he does have 1,826 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he has been picked off ten times.
The main reason the Zips haven’t put together a better record this year is the defense, giving up 405.5 ypg and 28.2 ppg. Akron just can’t stop the run, giving up 211.2 ypg rushing, but they do a good job of forcing opponents to make mistakes, forcing 20 turnovers this year. Getting to the quarterback has been a problem as the Zip only have eight sacks.
Even though Akron hasn’t won a game at home this year, they are favored for a reason and that is they are more talented than Toledo. However, with the college football odds on this game coming in a nearly a touchdown, are they that much better?
