Top 5 NBA Disappointments
1. Phoenix Suns
The biggest disappointment in the NBA this season is the Phoenix Suns. This team has one of the games elite point guards (Steve Nash), one of its elite power forwards (Amare Stoudemire), and perhaps the greatest center of all-time (Shaquille O’Neal) and it is only five games above .500 at this point. Oh yeah, and Phoenix brought in a 20-point scorer in Jason Richardson and it has one of the elite sixth-men in Leandro Barbosa. There’s still no defense in the desert and the offense has lost some of its potency because it doesn’t knock down as many threes.
2. Detroit Pistons
Detroit hits the panic button early and deals away its best player for Allen Iverson, who is way more interested in shooting than playing defense. I expected way better from Joe Dumars. The defense is still one of the best in the NBA but the offense is terrible as Detroit is really lacking confidence on that end. Rip Hamilton thrived with Billups because Billups is a pass first point guard. Hamilton has looked like a chicken running around with his head cut off at times alongside Iverson because Iverson is looking to score himself instead of hitting Rip with a pass when he is open coming off a screen. Detroit only had 23 losses all of last season and already has 21 this year. It looks like the Pistons reign as a perennial East contender is over.
3. Utah Jazz
The Jazz continue to be strong at home, but they have already lost more home games this season than they did all of last. The major disappointment is that this team has not been able to take the necessary steps to get better on the road. Utah is just 8-16 away from home. The injuries have been a major disappointment for this team as well and that has definitely played a part in its struggles, but that is no excuse for .333 road winning percentage. This team was in the Western Conference Finals two seasons ago and appears to be moving backwards. Remember that this team was a sleeper pick by many experts to make the NBA Finals. We’ll see if the Jazz can find some rhythm once they get healthy.
4. Washington Wizards
The Wizards won 43 games last season and 41 the year before that, but this team is experiencing a huge decline this year. Washington is only 10-39 at this point as injuries have taken their toll. With as talented as Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler are, the Wizards should be winning more games than this. It was as if the injury to Gilbert Arenas for the one hundredth time just took the wind out of their sails because they knew they weren’t going to be able to be very good without him.
5. Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers won 40 games two years ago. They were in the basement again with only 23 last season, but hopes were high for another turnaround with Baron Davis and Marcus Camby coming to town. What a bunch of fool’s gold they have been. The Clippers are only 10-39 on the season and are playing like they don’t even care about winning. With Ricky Davis and Zach Randolph coming off the bench, this team is more talented than it is playing right now.
