Tulane Alabama Spread, Line, Picks & College Football Odds
The Tulane Green Wave will head to Bryant-Denny Field to take on the Crimson Tide of Alabama in a non-conference matchup that is pretty much only generating excitement after the way the Tide took care of the Clemson Tigers in week 1. The early line from the oddsmakers at BetUS has Alabama as a 30 point favorite over Tulane.
The Nick Saban era got off to a rocky start, with the Tide losing their last four regular season games of 2007. However, a great recruiting class and another year under Saban’s system had the Tide faithful confident better things would be on the horizon in 2008. Now, expectations will be higher than ever after Alabama blew a talented, and highly ranked, Clemson team out 34-10 in week 1.
While this team was supposed to be better than the squad that barely finished above .500 a year ago, they weren’t supposed to contend for the SEC title with the likes of Georgia, Florida, LSU, and Auburn all highly ranked in the preseason polls. Somebody forget to tell the Tide players that though, as they went out and shocked the football world with a dominating performance over then no. 9 Clemson at the Georgia Dome. The most eye-opening stat of the night was how the Tide managed to hold the powerful Tiger ground game to 0 net yards, while piling on 239 rushing yards themselves.
The passing attack, led by quarterback John Parker Wilson got the job done as well. Wilson was 22-for-30 with three passing touchdowns, and he added a score with his feet as the Tide moved up 11 spots in the AP’s Top 25 poll. If there is any good news for Tulane it is that they might not have to worry about getting past left tackle Andre Smith, who was the best blocker in the SEC a year ago. He has a right knee sprain that may keep him out of this contest.
Tulane will be playing their first game of the season, and the Green Wave aren’t expected to be very good this season. After coming off a 4-8 season, there aren’t many pundits predicting this team to contended for the Conference USA title, let alone compete with a talented SEC powerhouse like Alabama. Making matters worse for the team is how their practice schedule has been shot due to Hurricane Gustav making its way to the New Orleans area earlier this week.
Tulane was forced to leave Louisiana on Saturday, where they traveled to Birmingham for the week before making their way down to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. This marks the second time in four years the team have had to deal with the distraction of a hurricane to start the season, as it was just 2005 when Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans. That year they didn’t get to play a single home game in New Orleans.
With this year’s storm not being nearly as destructive the team can turn their minds back to football, where they will worry about how to stop this prolific Tide offense. Stopping Wilson and the passing game could be tough for the team that ranked 111th in the nation in 2007.
The offense will have to deal with the loss of Matt Forte, who will be suiting up for the Chicago Bears this year after gaining 2,127 yards on the ground a year ago, good for 2nd in the nation. Junior Andre Anderson will take over, but he only has 14 carries for 91 yards in his career.
