Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers Line

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 9, 2011

The Green Bay Packers (8-0) will try to remain unbeaten when they host the Minnesota Vikings (2-6) Monday night.

Odds makers believe the defending Super Bowl champs will make rather easy work of their division rivals.

The Packers are currently listed as a 13-point favorite with the total set at 51.

Green Bay was tested at San Diego last Sunday but walked away with a 45-38 victory behind another spectacular performance from Aaron Rodgers, who completed 21 of 26 passes for 247 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Five of his completions, including one of the touchdown tosses, went to Jordy Nelson, who led the Packers with 105 receiving yards.

James Starks led the way on the ground with 66 of the team’s 136 rushing yards.

The Vikings went into their bye week with a 24-21 victory on the road over the Carolina Panthers.

Rookie quarterback Christian Ponder played well, completing 18 of 28 throws for 236 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Five of those completions, including the touchdown, went to star running back Adrian Peterson, who led the Vikes with 76 receiving yards. He also gained 86 of the team’s 132 rushing yards and ran for a score.

It will likely take another strong performance from Peterson for Minnesota to have a chance Monday, and that just might be in the cards.

The All-Pro rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota’s 33-27 home loss to the Packers on Oct. 23.

Green Bay certainly isn’t immune to giving up a lot of yards. It currently ranks 30th in the league in total defense with 399.6 yards allowed per game.

The first meeting told us a big game from Peterson is enough for the Vikings to keep it close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. The Vikes will have to do a better job of slowing down Rodgers in order to pull off the upset.

Rodgers torched Minnesota for 335 yards and three touchdowns with no picks while completing 80 percent of his passes in the first meeting.

Rodgers is likely set for another big game against a Minnesota defense that ranks 30th in the league against the pass with 273.6 yards allowed per contest.

The Packers have won the last three meetings in this series, but the road team and underdog has typically been the play.

The road team is 13-6 against the spread in the last 19 meetings, and the underdog is 18-7 against the number in the last 25 matchups. It is also worth noting that the Vikings are 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 meetings at Lambeau Field.

As far as the total is concerned, the over has been the play in recent years. These two have combined to finish over the number in six of the last seven meetings.
