Minnesota Vikings at Tennessee Titans Odds & NFL Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on September 26, 2008

The Minnesota Vikings head south to take on undefeated Tennessee Titans this Sunday. The Vikings will finally go into a game with some momentum coming off a much needed win over the then-unbeaten Carolina Panthers last week. Odds makers don’t think the Vikings will be spoiling Tennessee’s fun however, and have listed Minnesota as a 3-point underdog with the total set at 35.5. Jimmy Boyd will preview both sides of this matchup and then give you who he thinks will cover the point spread.

The last time the Tennessee Titans started a season 3-0, they made it all the way to the Super Bowl. Who knows what his team could do if they get off to a 4-0 start for the first time in franchise history?

Tennessee has now won six consecutive regular season contests dating back to last season thanks to a stingy defense which is yet to allow more than 12 points in a game in the 2008 season. The defensive unit is ranked first in the NFL in points allowed, giving up just 9.7 per game, and third in total defense, allowing only 240.3 yards per game.

Tennessee mopped up the floor with division rival Houston last Sunday, holding the Texans to just 171 yards passing. Titans QB Kerry Collins was solid in his second start in place of Vince Young, throwing for 189 yards and a score.

Tennessee boasts the third-best pass defense in the league with a secondary that should give Vikings QB Gus Frerotte all he can handle. Tennessee has picked off at least two passes in each of its first three games, leads the league with seven total interceptions, and is tops in the AFC with 11 sacks. The run defense is also onlyg giving up 89 yards per game.

Minnesota knows it faced a tough task this week in winning on the road against a good football team, but it does have history on its side. The Vikings have won 7 of the 10 matchups in the all-time series, including four straight. Tennessee head man Jeff Fisher is also 0-4 against Minnesota in his career. Those are some pretty good numbers to have on your side if you’re the Vikings and you know you need to get back to the .500 mark this week.

Like Tennessee, Minnesota has dipped into the backup QB pool. Tarvaris Jackson was not getting the job done so the team decided to make the move to go with veteran Gus Frerotte. The move paid off as Minnesota beat the Panthers 20-10 last Sunday.

Frerotte threw for 204 yards and added a touchdown.

Star running back Adrian Peterson is nursing a hamstring injury, but he is not letting it keep him out of games. He rushed for 77 yards on 17 carries last week, but will need to be even better against a tougher Tennessee defense this week.

Minnesota has continued its strong defensive play in 2008, ranking fourth in the league against the run at 70.3 yards per game and seventh in total defense at 280.7 yards per game.

We’re expecting a defensive battle this week and so are the odds makers as you can see by the total being set at a rather low number. The Titans have one of the strongest defenses in the league and home field in its favor this week. They’ll be very tough on Adrian Peterson and the Vikings run game, forcing Frerotte to beat them through the air. That will be a tall task for a QB which hasn’t seen many reps of late, especially against a secondary as talented as Tennessee’s. We’ll bet the Tennessee Titans at -3 at Bookmaker.
