Virginia at Georgia Tech Football Odds

Written by Jack Jones

It’s hard to believe but Virginia has gone from a 1-3 team that was blown out in all three losses to one of the hottest teams in the ACC. The turnaround is largely due to a 3-0 homestand that saw them grab a couple of conference wins, including last week’s 16-13 victory over North Carolina. Now they get to play on the road against Georgia Tech, who is leading the Coastal Division and is half a game ahead of the Cavaliers in the standings. The Yellow Jackets are fairly hot themselves after coming off of a 21-17 win against Clemson last Saturday to give them four wins in a row. The college football lines makers seem to be giving Tech the nod in this one as the Yellow Jackets are listed as 14-point favorites with the total listed at 39.

One of the reasons that the Jackets are favored is the perfect record they have put together at home. Revenge may be on the minds of the Georgia Tech players after having lost four of the last five in the series, but the good news for Jackets fans are that the home team has won 12 of the last 13 matchups between the two schools.

Virginia has put up 27.3 ppg and 377.3 yards per game in piling up their three straight wins after struggling with just 9 ppg and 251 ypg in their first four games. Quarterback Marc Verica is doing his part, completing 65.3% of his passes. He has a talented target in Kevin Olgetree who has 37 receptions and 455 yards to go with three scores. Cedric Peerman hasn’t put up big numbers running the ball, but has been effective when needed in the clutch.

The Cavalier defense is finding it’s strength in getting to the opposing passers, racking up 19 sacks this year. The unit also performed well in holding the Tar Heels to just 13 points while forcing three turnovers. Georgia Tech’s offense revolves around the running game and they are gaining 248 rushing yards per game. With a 5 yards per carry average and 16 rushing touchdowns the front seven of Virginia is going to have to be ready to make some stops. Josh Nesbitt only threw for 91 yards last week, but ran for 77 and a score. He isn’t a real threat passing with only two passing touchdowns in five games, but he has ran for five and 357 yards. Jonathan Dwyer also plays a big part in the ground game, going for 684 yards on the year after his 109 yard effort against Clemson.

The Yellow Jacket defense has been tough this year to say the least, giving up just 11.6 ppg and 254.6 ypg while forcing 19 turnovers and getting to the quarterback 20 times. Last week against Clemson the unit forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. If you are looking to bet on Georgia Tech -14, Sportsbook.com has easy deposit methods and a 10% signup bonus.
