Virginia at Virginia Tech Football Picks & Predictions
Virginia Tech gets a chance to win their half of the ACC this week and earn a spot in the ACC Championship game. They’ll be up against their old state rival, Virginia, but all indications are that this won’t be much of a challenge for the Hokies. Virginia Tech simply has too much to lose and are too good of a team to let this one slip past them. They still have to play the game, however, but the signs all point to an easy win at home for the Hokies. Virginia Tech is favored by 8 points over Virginia this week and the total is set at 38 points.
It’s safe to say that the Virginia Cavaliers have had an awful year on offense this season. They’ve managed just 16 points per game on 304 yards of total offense. The biggest culprit seems to bet the running game, which is averaging just 90 yards per game on 3.2 yards per carry. It’s not like the passing game has been able to make up for that lack of production though. The Cavs are putting up just 214 yards through the air per contest this season. Things only get worse for Virginia as well. They’ve are scoring just 13.5 points on the road and running for only 74 yards per game.
The defensive unit for Virginia has done well enough to keep them in games, even with their dreadful offense. They are allowing 22 points per game on 324 yards per game, respectable numbers for sure, they just can’t get the offense to score any points and win them some games. Both the passing and rushing defense has been solid for the Cavaliers. They’ve given up only 144 rushing yards per game and are allowing just 179 passing yards per game. Virginia doesn’t face a particularly explosive offense this week, but they will need to keep the Hokies out of the end zone, something they’ve struggled to do in the past. The Cavaliers are 8 point underdogs this week.
It’s hard to see how Virginia Tech has been successful this season with just 293 yards of total offense per game. The Hokies are gaining just 128 passing yards and 165 rushing yards per game, but they’ve managed to put up 22 points per game, so they’ve made the best of what they’ve been able to gain. They’ll be facing a Virginia defense that doesn’t play very well against the run on the road, so the Hokies should be able to rely on their biggest strength.
The Hokies have definitely fared well on defense his season, which answer the question of how they’ve been successful this year. Virginia Tech allows just 18.3 points per game and they’ve held opponents to only 277 yards of total offense per game. The rushing defense has been very impressive, allowing just 107 yards per game. Against the pass, the Hokies have been nearly as successful, yielding only 170 yards through the air. This week they’ll face a Virginia offense that hasn’t had much success against weaker defenses, so that certainly plays to Virginia Tech’s favor. VA Tech is an 8 point favorite at home this week.
The Hokies haven’t lost at home this season and I don’t expect them to start this week. They have too much to play for with the possibility of an ACC Championship on the line. Tech jumps on Virginia early, then grinds out a convincing victory.
Predicted Score: Virginia Tech 28, Virginia 10
