Washington Redskins at New York Giants NFL Betting Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

skins giants 91009The Washington Redskins and the New York Giants open up their 2009 NFL schedules this Sunday in a heated NFC East showdown at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This head to head series has been all Giants. With New York’s 23-7 win in Week 13, it improved to 87-61-4 all-time against Washington. The Giants have also won seven of the last 10 meetings. New York followed up its Super Bowl season with a division championship, but the team clearly lost momentum after the Plaxico Burress shooting incident and was not able to do any damage in the playoffs. The Redskins are coming off a disappointing end to the 2008 season as well, as they finished poorly after jumping out to a 6-2 start. The football odds makers have spoken, listing the New York Giants as the 6.5-point favorite with the total set at 37.

We know the New York Giants can run the football, and I have no doubt that they will once again be one of the premier running teams in the league, but how well they pass it will decide if they are capable of making a Super Bowl run. Plaxico Burress was New York’s big play receiver and Amani Toomer was old reliable when the Giants needed a first down in the possession game. Neither one will be available for Eli Manning this season so it is now time for a young group to step in and step up. That means that Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon, Hakeem Nicks, and tight end Kevin Boss will have to be the guys to get the job done.

Defensively, the Giants’ pass rush has been their biggest asset. It was the single most important factor in their Super Bowl win against the Patriots two seasons ago. If the boys up front are able to get their usual penetration, it could be a long day for Jason Campbell and the Redskins. If you like New York to continue its dominance over the Redskins and cover the spread in the process, bet the Giants at -6.5 at Bookmaker.

The Redskins are expecting big things on the defensive side of the football following the signing of, perhaps, the game’s best defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The Redskins finished with the fourth best defense in the NFL a season ago and now they add an impact player up front who can stuff the run and get to the quarterback. If Haynesworth earns his hefty paycheck, the Redskins just might be able to rise to the top of the NFC East. But they won’t be able to do so with great defense alone. Quarterback Jason Campbell needs to be the man this season. He needs to show the organization that it was foolish for engaging in trade talks for Jay Cutler and looking to draft Mark Sanchez. If he can be a confident passer this season, opposing teams won’t be able to sit on the run and the Redskins will be a much better offensive football team. Confidence is the key work there because he has the ability. If you think Washington can take the Giants down to the wire in Week 1, bet the Redskins at +6.5 at Bookmaker.
