West Virginia at Pittsburgh Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jack Jones

The Backyard Brawl takes place at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Friday as West Virginia takes on Pittsburgh. West Virginia has come back to life after some early season struggles and is riding high off of a 35-21 win over Louisville. That marked the sixth win in the last seven games for the Mountaineers who will still earn a share of the Big East title if they can beat Pitt and South Florida to close out the year. The Panthers on the other hand lost control of the Big East with a loss to Cincinnati last week and now are 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big East. The odds makers are slightly favoring West Virginia in this one making them a 3-point favorite over Pitt.

West Virginia continues to rely heavily on the run, gaining 231 ypg on the ground while adding 134 ypg through the air. Quarterback Pat White has ran for 786 yards and seven touchdowns while tailback Noel Devine has added 1,121 yards and three scores. White has also shown himself to be an able passer this year with 17 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

The Mountaineers defense has looked pretty good this year too, holding opponents to just 16.5 ppg and 320.4 total ypg. The run defense is stopping opponents fairly well by allowing only 126.1 ypg while the pass defense has only allowed 194.3 ypg. The Mountaineers have also been fairly opportunistic this year in forcing 20 turnovers. If you want to bet West Virginia -3, bet the game at BetUS where you can get up to 145% in signup bonuses!

Pitt’s offense has been productive in gaining 144.2 ypg on the ground and 225.8 ypg through the passing attack, but the Panthers have been hurt by 19 turnovers. Running back LeSean McCoy has been the leader of the unit in picking up 1,125 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. He is also a factor in the passing attack with 26 receptions on the season. Quarterback Bill Stull has completed 60% of his passes for 2,007 yards, but has only six passing touchdowns.

Pittsburgh is giving up only 324.5 total yards per game on the year. The Panthers have been especially stout against the ground game, holding opponents to just 115.2 ypg. The team is losing the turnover battle though, partly due to the offense giving it away and partly because they have only forced 14 on the year.
