Worst Super Bowl Moments
There are several moments throughout Super Bowl history that are more painful than passing a kidney stone to the players, coaches, and fans who lived them. I’ve already showed you my list of the Super Bowl’s best moments so I thought we should do a worst Super Bowl moments list as well. I hope none of these are too painful for any of you guys.
1. Wide right
The Buffalo Bills could have been the team of the 1990’s. They advanced to four consecutive Super Bowls but came up short in each. Its best chance to win was in its first trip when Scott Norwood missed a 47-yard field goal wide right against the New York Gants in Super Bowl XXV. The kick proved to be a bad omen haunting the Bills in the next three Super Bowls.
2. Don’t quit your day job
Just mention the name Garo Yepremiam, and you already know the tale I’m about to tell. There was one embarrassing moment during that miraculous perfect season. The Miami kicker lined up for a 42-yard field goal. When his low kick was blocked by the Redskins, Yepremian picked up the loose ball and proceeded to throw what has to be known as the worst pass is Super Bowl history. The ball slipped out of his hand and then he knocked it up in the air for Redskins safety Mike Bass to grab and run for a touchdown. Luckily the Dolphins held on or Yepremian would have had to take up residency on the moon.
3. Tennessee Heartbreak
This play is one of the best moments in the history of the St. Louis Rams franchise which makes it the worst in Tennessee Titans history. When Rams linebacker Mike Jones stopped Titans wide out Kevin Dyson one yard short of the goal line in Super Bowl XXXIV to deliver the Rams its only Super Bowl title, we witnessed one of the most thrilling endings in Super Bowl history. This one-yard of agony represents just how close the Tennessee Titans came to tying the Rams and having a shot at a Super Bowl title.
4. Nice Hands Feet
The Dallas Cowboy’s Jackie Smith dropped a perfect pass in the end zone from Roger Staubach in the Cowboys 35-31 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXIII to go down as one of the biggest chokes we have every seen. His reaction is agonizing and he retired before the start of the next season. What a sad ending to the career of one of the NFL’s best tight ends. Thank God the Cowboys have had a few other things go their way.
5. Lett him Beebe, or not
Leon Lett will never live this one down. Dallas was punishing the Bills in Super Bowl XXVII, and Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Leon Lett was loose with the football looking to reach paydirt after picking up a fumble. Lett was excessively celebrating a little too soon as Buffalo wide receiver Don Beebe made one of the greatest hustle plays of all time. Beebe knocked the ball out of Lett’s hands through the back of the end zone to earn a touchback and to keep Lett from rubbing the score in Buffalo’s face any further. This play had no bearing on the game and still Lett is seen as a fool in this moment.
